Increased levels of enforcement, and where...

Iowa has become a police state.

For several weeks before the last 72 hour blitz this past June I'd noticed that they were yanking guys and inspecting them -- creepers and all -- right there on the shoulder of I80. One of the busiest highways in the nation, and these assholes are rolling around on creepers not three inches from 70 mph traffic. Then, when an "officer is killed in the line of duty" -- we're all supposed to feel bad.

Bull****.

Today, on a SATURDAY on the south side of Des Moines, there were a bunch of DOT roving patrols doing that same thing. They were yanking anyone and everyone. I saw flats and vans and tankers alike. They were staring at me as I went by. I avoid eye contact whenever possible. I'm superstitous like that. I really am.

I hate it, and it makes me not want to drive trucks anymore. Not because I'm always doing something wrong...those days are pretty much gone for me...but because I know it's not for "safety". It's because governments at every level are broke, and need money. So they prey on the citizenry for revenue. So they start with big trucks. Meanwhile I'm starting to think that the Iowa DOT HAS to be the largest employer in the state. They have trucks and workers and projects EVERYWHERE.

But let's extend that thinking down to local police departments.

There will never be a public backlash no matter how heavy enforcement of trucks gets. After all, they're enforcing "safety"...and who is against that?? But within me, this behavior of law enforcement is causing an ire. I'm losing respect for these people in a hurry. Who the HELL grows up wanting to check logbooks anyway? Are the guys in the scalehouse the "C" students from the trooper academies? Seriously. Who the hell wants that job to begin with? It's not about safety...it's about control, money and malevolent power.

But what about when the government starts using it's police to prey upon it's citizenry at random in this way? What's to stop them? Why wouldn't they do this? Local police stopping citizens out of nowhere. It's already happened to me come to think of it. I was dispatching nights, and going home at 1230 at night. I was the only car on the road, so the trooper stopped me. He told me I had a "loud exhaust". We have NO vehicle inspection in my state, and this was not any reason to stop me. He was looking for a drunk to nail. It was 1230 Saturday night. I got a seat belt ticket. At the time that was 10 bucks, no points. Pretty slim "probable cause" if you ask me.

They WILL do this. It's just a matter of time. Will the people wake up then?

I said in BYP's thread that I've been inspected, ticketed and fined more in the last 14 months or so that in the past 16 years combined, and that's real. I'm SERIOUS about that. It's gotten ridiculous out there.

"When injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty." --Henry David Thoreau

Believe me we've noticed it too.
As budgets get tighter and people revolt against taxes, the only thing left is "fines", collected by armed guards.

That's why our founding fathers wanted us to be armed too. So we can protect ourselves against this sort of tyranny.

And I think it's a damn SHAME how some people would consider what I'm saying to be "extremism".

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government". - Thomas Jefferson

"What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance?" - Thomas Jefferson

I go thru Iowa every week to go to the yard.I have'nt noticed any officers pulling trks over just to inspect them but considering the economy nothing surprises me.Peopl are going to make up for lost money in one way or another.Sad we citizens have to be the victims. This is one reason why I start ungodly hrs so the DOT is less likely to mess with me.I see very few officers out.I never see any weigh stations open unless in Arkansas and they always give me the bypass lane. But look on the bright side,Winter is coming, heaven forbid DOT won't be doing any inspections, the wousses don't want to freeze.

Top of the early morning to you rebel! The police depts everywhere have had budget cuts so they will most definately be trying to earn that money back by stopping every person without a seatbelt on or perhaps even 1 mile over the speed limit. It is going to be a big mess.

IA has had roving truck enforcement for a long time, and they have it in for trucks. I seen four units this morning between dubuque and Davenport, but only one had vehicle pulled over, and that was a van pulling a enclosed car trailer. No problem going through Des moines at 10pm.

I go thru Desmoines every week on my way to TX but now that I think about it there are alot more looking for speeders, not just Iowa but every state. What we the americans have to go thru because our crooked politians did this to our economy. But yet ppl keep on voting and supporting the very ones that got us in this mess.I know they never lie.

When I was still turning wrenches at the power company I worked swing shift. I would get off at around 11:30 and drive home, about a 35 to 40 minute drive.

Simple observation had clued me into the fact that at that time of the night the barfly crowd was starting to wend their way home and the drunkard traffic stops were the focus of the white cars with blue lights.

I would get stopped about 5 or six times a year by the state troopers. It was always just a "random and routine" stop. Often the trooper would ask me if I had been drinking. My response was always the same, "Um, gee assifer, I just got off work, and I'm driving home. Don't you have any real criminals to chase?"

Driving through ustin today I seen no less than 20 patrols working the interstate.

Tell me about! After 30 years of driving with no warnings or tickets, I recently got 3 safety belt violations and 1 warning for going 5 miles over the speed limit in my personal car...

They quit making Buells for a good reason. Nobody was buying them.

In Houston we hire motorcycle cops all the time as escorts. Their deal is that they pick out and spec the bike, buy it, and over time the city reimburses them.

More of them have Goldwings than anything.

You guys are killing the bitter, revolutionary spirit of my thread.

I can't remember what state it was but the law was out one nite in full force from 11 pm to 3 am and gave out 393 tickets.Few for not having insurance and most for drunk driving.

Pretty bad When the working man is taxed and then re-taxed by way of fines in a preditory fashion while trying to earn a living. To pay for programes for (some not all) people that are perfectly capable of contributing.

It does present a problem, doesn't it?

The rules are simple: Don't break the law and you don't have to pay.

You don`t have to break the law to get a ticket or be charged with a crime. I can testify to the later and the fore mentioned.Trust me if it ever happens to you you will change your tune. But I still respect law enforcement and the law.

agree, we have a cop in the small town of norwood about 50 miles away who hates bikes, he will pull you over for b.s. reasons and give you tickets for modifying your ride.

Heard that! I have had many b.s tickets that I have fought and won, One criminal charge that would have been a felony.I was on the same street 5 miles from then scene when said crime occoured and I was fingered.A whole lot of time, money for lawyers and a whole lot o ****ting bricks,( as I was in a job that required A high level of security clearance) I was found not guilty.Oh I shoul add 6 hours of interigation at witch point I contamplaited just saying I did it just to go home and make the madness stop

No doubt, but that is a different matter. I've had more than my share of bogus tickets.
