For the most part, what happens on IRT is scripted. All the comments about Canadian Drivers taking jobs from Alaskans in the last two seasons were instigated by the TV crew. Same thing with the comments about Lisa and the other girl, I never looked up to catch her name.
Hugh on TV persona is manufactured. I hear horn sound effect all the time, but I never see Hugh pulling his horn. It's just TV. What I do see is Hugh busting his butt. He doesn't accept failure. He fixes blown tires on the side of the road, drives bull dozers and fixes generators that have been sitting for several seasons. I don't think he is perfect and some of the things he has done are boneheaded. I still think if you have an impossible job, you want to give it to Hugh, he will get it done.
I quit watching after the first or 2nd season simply because I'm too busy. An ex-girlfriend got me season 1 on DVD, then bitched and complained every time I wanted to actually watch it.
Now I see bits and pieces of the show and they've got this hot blonde chick, ... so I guess the writers and directors felt they needed to bring in some eye candy.
I would like to get the opinions of some REAL ice road truckers, those who were never on the show, to see what their opinion of the show is. I bet they'd be complaining non-stop about inaccuracies and the sort of behavior displayed by some of these actors.
When I was up there last year I stopped in coldfoot and talked to the drivers. Nobody really wanted to talk and they all seemed pretty disgusted about the subject.
Regardless of their opinions of the show, I'm sure they were just tired of talking about it with every single "tourist" who stops by. I bet the people up there were comfortable with their quiet small rural town life until the TV cameras showed up and made the place famous.
I would imagine the residents of Roswell, NM get tired of visitors asking about space aliens. Or the people who live in Dodge City, KS or Tombstone, AZ probably get tired of talking about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday.
I watched a few episodes today as I was getting over my heartbreak from not being able to do yard work becuase of rain.
There's a part where Dave Redmond crosses the Yukon bridge while it's a total sheet of ice. He's leaning on the wheel driving with his elbows. Had the truck broke loose suddenly, there's now way he could have countersteered in time to save anything leaning on the wheel like that.
...and is "everything is against me" attitude about EVERYTHING is a bit much.
Having a load that's 17' 6" tall is no joke. The tallest I pulled was 17' 1", and I was behind another guy who'd run the route a few times beforehand, so I had it pretty easy. This show doesn't seem to make a big enough issue of tall loads. maybe once they leave town and the overpasses stop, it's not that big a deal...I dunno...
Anyway, I kept thinking "why the hell aren't they running a hieght pole?" then I caught a glimpse of a rear escort, and realized they probably were, and just decided not to show it. More dramatic that way.
I'll probably delete most of the season.
You are probably right to some degree, but i got the impression there was more to it. I don't think they welcomed outsiders.
Roswell is totally different. Their livelihood relies on tourists and everybody wants your money.
I think I finally agree with Mr. Brick.
.
Caught up on a few more episodes this weekend.
WTF Band wagon is Rick Yemm jumping now anyway, with that stupid symbol that looks eerily similar to this:

I doubt he knows that though, which makes him look that much more foolish. I HATED that show as a kid. I only watched it because it came on before The Hulk. I remember one season he got chased out of the bush while wearing the same Bubba Army shirt. They probably chased him out BECAUSE he was wearing a Bubba Army shirt. He wears a hat with the symbol, has a shirt, a tattoo...the whole nine. People like him make me want to invent something easily marketable, thats of no significance, is cheap to produce and distribute, and can make it to Canada.
I watched Alex wander off into the tundra...chasing a skunk for no reason at all. Even he didn't know why. He smashed into a camera car, and did about as much damage as to the one in India, only going a lot faster. Why the hell was he going that fast near the camera car?
Alabama Dave is still kinda stupid. Apparently he can run loads, just not survive the politics at Carlile. He was at the top of the load count, and the next thing you know, he's supposed to sit behind Mara, and Tony, and doesn't bother to do so, so he gets in trouble. Then, he barks and gripes, and everyone is against him. I can't help but think Carlile may have been playing with him behind the scenes a bit. Some people just do better on their own. Just leave them that way. BUT...Carlile's sandbox...Carlile's rules too. Season's almost over dude...don't get fired from dumb stuff now...even though that pipe in the drom incident probably did it anyway...
Oh, and I saw a billboard at home. There's a casino north of me a ways that has had some fairly odd guests lately. Dog The Bounty Hunter for example. Who the hell would [ay money to sit in an auditorium and listen to that man talk? What's he going to say? Is he going to give fashion tips?

Which brings me to my point. At this same casino, Lisa Kelly of IRT will be appearing. I looked for the announcement on the internets, but didn't see it. On the billboard, they use the most unflattering picture of her I can imagine, except if she were picking her nose. I think she's probably on of the better drivers on the show overall for her niche, but again, I cannot imagine why I'd want to pay money to see her live and in person, and what sort of sermon she would give. Bad hair tips? Look at my one weird vampire tooth? Meet my miniature horse?
Anyway, only few episodes left to torture myself with. Probably just in time for another season. I must hate my brain or something...
Dont forget the young bloke from the first season, no muss no fuss, got it done..
