Hauling Small Arms Ammo

Got a question, any one haul small arms ammo may be able to answer it or point me in the right direction. Does it require a placard on the trailer, and does the amount hauled have to be a certain amount of bullets to require placarding?

The reason I asked is that I hauled 16pallets of 7.62X32 HP rough count was over 1 millon bullets the other day and was told it did not require placards, hauled it over 80 miles.

This is my protocol at work for our Motor Coach's, no placard or endorsement.
You could probably carry more than my limits because you don't have the passengers.
We transport a lot of Air National Guard personnel.

Buses may carry small arms ammunition labeled ORM-D, emergency hospital supplies
and drugs. You can carry small amounts of
some other hazardous materials if the
shipper cannot send them any other way.

Buses must never carry:
Division 2.3 poisons, liquid Division 6.1 poisons,
tear gas, irritating materials.
More than 100 lbs. of solid Division 6.1
poisons.
Explosives in the space occupied by people,
except small arms ammunition.
Labeled radioactive materials in the space
occupied by people.
More than 500 lbs. total of allowed
hazardous materials, and no more than 100
lbs. of any one class.

According to the MSDS for Small Arms Ammunition from Winchester Arms, it is not required to be placarded for shipping.

As long as you have the shipping papers, they are in order, and you carry them in accordance with the Hazmat Regulations, you should be OK.

By the way, the distance a hazmat load is hauled does not matter. If it is required to be placarded, it will be required for a trip of 3,000 miles or a trip across the street.

And the reportable quantities are based on weight, not how many "rounds" there are in the load.

thanks Racer I was just wondering because we as a rule do not haul ammo, weight was 39,900 lbs, bills stated ammunition only and were hand written. as I said I was wondering.

Well it is still a hazmat item, even if it doesn't require a placard. And as such if it were me, I would follow the other requirements regarding the shipping papers, i.e. whatever is required is there, and it is kept either in the door pocket or on the seat when I am out of the truck, and within arms reach when I am driving.

i would think it would need a placard. if it caught on fire, the fire department could get a big surprise if they couldnt get to the shipping papers.
