Give Them Nothing Beyond What Is Required.

Dealing with DOT is like dealing with Border agents. Just answer the fucking questions, Nothing less and never anything more. Nervous people have a habit of talking too much. (actually most people talk too much!).
I like the part where DOT ask for a full brake application. No problem. (I will give you 10 lbs on the application gauge).

The one time they said I had no brake lights. well let me try it again.
(with the Fords if you pulled the 4-ways and hit the brakes it would look like brake lights so, that is what I did)
Oh, the brake lights are working now.
Yeah I don't know what happened the first time. weird huh? :dunno: :thefinger:

Dealing with DOT is like dealing with Border agents...

I've got lots of experience with border agents. The other end of the spectrum from minimal information is too much information

After Christmas is the best. "Anything to declare?". Well, my aunt knitted me a sweater and they also gave me a crock pot, and I got a cookbook and some CDs from my cousin... It's even better if you start pulling things out to show them. About the time I get to 'crock pot' they start shaking their head and waving me through. "Just go"

One of the best was the time I tried to get rid of my cousin's Christmas tree by taking it across the border. "Sir, did you know you have a tree in the back of your truck!?" Oh, forgot that was back there. I guess you should probably confiscate that. They didn't, and were pissed about it

This applies to any sort of enforcement.

To expand on that, know what you are required to provide. Just because they ask for it, or ask for access to it, doesn't mean you have to provide it. Know your rights.
License, registration for truck and trailer, med card, and ONE freight bill. They dont get all of em without askin, especially if I got hazmat on board that dont need placards. Thats usually when the microscope comes out

That risk is too high. Not worth it on your end. If it's Haz-Mat, AFAIK it has to be placarded I don't know of a line there.

I'm not quite in tune to what everyone does here other than drive.
We carry HM in vans all the time. It's listed separately on the BOL. Rarely does it exceed amounts requiring placards. When it does its because someone put too many boxes of matches on a trailer or some other real earth stopping hazard.

And if its matches it might even be marked “limited quantity” which means no placards anyway. I get fire extinguishers like that all the time
