Well since this has turned into a discussion about the weather, it is supposed to snow at my place this weekend. Good times.

So, whats growing in your garden this year? Anyone planning for Spring already? I have seeds started for peas and broccoli. Even got some lettuce already up in pots on the front porch.

Not yet.
I was gonna till everything this weekend, but the boss offered OT and there might not be much of that available once the 3rd shift gets in gear in a week or so.
Besides, we always have a good chance of a late freeze around the middle of March. Last year it came just as the beans were coming up and Becka was gonna pull them up and start over. I said wait and see if they come back, sure enough they did.

You've already got stuff planted?? I know Tennessee has a warmer climate, but I didn't realize it was that much different. I'd probably need a jack-hammer to dig a hole here.

I don't know if I can patent something that's made by taking two other patented devices and simply making them work with each other for a purpose neither of them were designed for.

I'm thinking about further complicating it though, by using rain barrels to collect the water and either some tall, rickety-looking "water tower" so I can use a gravity feed, or using an electric sump pump instead of the washing machine shutoff valve. But then I'd need some kind of redundancy for if there's no water in the barrels, both to keep the plants watered with our sulfuric acid/rust mixture that comes out the faucets here, and to protect the pump from running dry.

Not much fertilizer. Some cow manure and some MiracleGro mixed with water. I got some 55 gal. plastic barrels with spigots in the lids hooked to soaker hoses. About 2 days of rain will fill up a barrel under the gutter drain spout.

I just hook up a soaker hose to the rain barrel. It's tipped over on its side and I just roll it where I want it.

I got a real early start this year. In fact, I should be about ready to harvest soon.

I just hook up a soaker hose to the rain barrel. It's tipped over on its side and I just roll it where I want it.

I'm just doing the veggies that seem to prefer cooler temperatures for right now. Peas and lettuce can stand a little frost but don't do so well in the hot summer months.

I wonder if my one remaining apple tree will ever have any more apples on it. Last summer a tornado ripped one of them out of the ground. I've heard that they won't make apples unless there's another apple tree nearby. Something about bees hauling stuff back and forth.

This reminds me of my Grandmas farm .When I would spend summer there . Wake up way too early feed the live stock then other things that had to be looked after . Just before dinner we would go out and pick everything we needed for dinner . Beans, peas, carrots ,taters and lettuce . Some of the best meals I ever had . I was raised in the city and still reside in the city for now until I finally pick up my country wide ass and move out of here.

Got the tilling done today. Should have root crops going in soon, in a few weeks, and the rest after I'm sure the last frost is gone.
It's 32* right now and a little snow just north of here.

Going to get some onion sets this week and get them started. I would love to have some taters but just not enough space and I have never had any luck with the trash can potatoes I have heard about.

Strawberries are amazing. I didn't know how well they would do up here, but they do fine.
Every fall I cover them with pine needles and pine boughs to help insulate them thru winter. Yes, it was mild this year, but last winter, it never got above 32 degrees for the whole month of December.
Strawberries bloomed in the spring like it was nothing.

After 3 years, they suggest you replant the mother plants with fresh ones. I guess like chickens, after 3 years the production drops off.

I planted blueberries last year. I'm hoping my soil is acidic enough for them to survive. I really need to test the soil. Maybe I will do that today after I plant some onions.

Don't know much about blueberries, we've got lots of wild blackberries growing all over the place.
These guys sounded like they knew a little about them.

If it were me, I'd take out a few pine trees for sunlight and use as much pine needles as I could for acidity. Mulch it in and let Mother Nature do the rest.
