The Hendrix Woodstock version is probably the most famous guitar version. But it's inaccurate and I find it disrespectful. Too much improvised weirdness.
Jimi did two versions of it. There's a movie called "Rainbow Bridge" and he did the soundtrack. On that album there's a brilliant multi-track version of the Star Spangled Banner that's totally badass due to his ability to manipulate & control the feedback you get from having the guitar too close to the speaker.
But it's also not an accurate representation of the song, so it's not something I'd crank out so loud every elderly veteran in a 5 mile radius can hear.
I had an old white haired guy with a VFW hat on bitch at me at a campground once because I played it really loud on the 4th of July on an electric guitar. He said the national anthem should not be played with "rock instruments"... Then like 30 seconds after he walked away, a younger guy who said he was active duty marine corps came up and asked me to play it again.
But the question isn't which song is our favorite, it's about what would be the first thing you'd play on that big-ass array of speakers that can be heard from over the horizon.. And as long as I'm forcing thousands of people to hear it, I'm gonna play a good, but accurate version of the national anthem.
Good Americans will like it, and democrats will hate it. It's absolutely the perfect song to force an entire county to listen to.
