Dr. D, why is there so much salt?

@DrDaliah

i just went shopping as normal, and i picked up some cans of soup and some ppeanut butter.

the oups have at least 680 mg of salt

the peanut butter has 140.

now these items i got at a local store named Aldi, so you may not have heard of it where you are. ALDI US - Homepage

they have their own brands of many products. i usually get the big jar of JIF peanut butter, that has 135 mg of salt by the way.

so what is it with the wide array of salt content in our foods?

to find salt free or low salt, the prices ARE NOT cheap up here in the north east. then too, there aren't as many soup choices as well.

many times, when i have a can of soup, i add about a half can of water, in hopes of diluting the salt content.

you see Doc, my dad had "the gout", up until the day he died. sometimes he'd get a flare up and it was painful, other times, for months maybe even a year or two, no gout problems.

my urologist told me, this IS hereditary.

i have had more than one 24 hour urine test that my uric acid(??) was very high.

of course the "usual advice" of drink more water and stay away from added salts, as well as large amounts already in the foods, was given.

dad was on some sort of pills for the gout.

i drink water, just not as much as any doctor says to. i actually do not drink much water (or any fluid) during the day. heck, even working in my garden and sweating like crazy, i do not stop for any drink.

i once did the "drink water all day long, like at the least, 2-4 liters worth"......

dear god, i was peeing all that day and into the following week!

so, what do i or anyone else do with such a high salt (sodium) content in foods?

and frankly, with my work schedule and sleep times, i really don't have as much time as needed to prep a lot of my own foods.
I hear ya. Products need to sell off the shelves so the better tasting the more marketable. what I do is buy the cut vegetables that you can take on the run and cook some meals that will last a few days so I can take a couple chicken legs on the run. Its tough out there will all the crap products.
