DETROIT DD16 - Any Thoughts From Experience?

Hey guys, I've been contemplating the purchase of a Western Star 4900EX with a DD16 in it. It's a 2018 and owner operator spec'ed.

I love the WS sleeper with their real cherry wood cabinetry and all the space you get in a long hood truck! Currently, driving a 2014 Kenworth W900B and like it a lot... though the whole drive train is coming up for a complete rebuild. $40k!! So, I thought, why not trade it in and use the $40k for a down payment.

I'm just wondering if the DD16 engine is worth my time... I'm a fan of the Cummins eng. I have an ISX15 485 now and it's been great! But the sleeper is a 72" and really getting tired of not having much room to move around in... like the WS sleeper does have.

Any thoughts from experience on the DETROIT DD16?

None of the 16L have the longevity of the 15L. Be it cat, Detroit or the Volvo’s.

I was considering the DD16 and realized the S60 14L could give me similar performance and less hassle. So went that route.

It’s my understanding the Volvo D16 and the Detroit DD16 are no longer offered.

I just bought a 2020 star with the DD16. The D16 Volvo/MP10 mack are what is discontinued.

@TruckerRon I just came out of a 5900 international with the 485 ISX. It was bumped up to 515. I purchased a 2020 4900 SB with the 600/2050 Detroit. It is worlds quieter and I can definitely tell it’s more stout even though I went with 3.90’s vs 4.30 that the old truck had. That’s about all I can say so far. I’ve only bob tailed a couple hundred miles trying to get it ready to roll.

Over all I’m as giddy as a school girl thus far.

I have one in my truck.

My old boss has one in his truck pulling base sections.
It pulls better then his old truck with a 625 Cat.
It averages .75 mpg better then the Cat.

Of course the 60 series engine beats them all! But I wanted a rig that's close to New as possible without spending the new price. Couple guys told me the dd16 is an excellent motor. One guy has a Western Star 4900 EX and he has 250000 miles on it so far and loves it!

I did find a 2015 Kenworth w900l with a Detroit 12.7 L as it is a glider. It's black in color which kind of bothers me because I live in Phoenix and the Summers will be hell in that truck! The other downfall about this truck is because of it being a glider ... it costs an arm and a leg!

What are you looking at actually doing with it.
