Colorado Chain Law (2022) Goes into Effect Tomorrow

Under the Colorado Chain Law, a commercial vehicle is defined as being used in commerce to transport passengers or property and fitting into you of the following categories:

• Has a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more lbs. inclusive of a towed unit which has a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000lbs.
• Has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more lbs.
• Is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver

Colorado’s CHAIN LAW REQUIRES Commercial Vehicles to have Tire Chains or an approved traction device in the vehicle from Sept. 1 to May 31 while on the I70 Corridor, from Dotsero (MM 133) to Golden (MM 259).

Colorado’s CHAIN LAW REQUIRES Commercial Vehicles to have 4 or more drive wheels covered with an appropriate traction device. (Except Busses)

Straight Trucks
Are allowed to use 4 tire cables as long as they are 0.415” in diameter or greater; 4 tire chains; 4 autosocks; auto chains or sanders, covering 4 drive tires.

Single Drive Axle Combinations
Are allowed to use 4 tire chains; 4 autosocks; auto chains or sanders covering 4 drive tires. NO CABLES ALLOWED

Tandem Drive Axle Combinations
Are allowed to use 4 tire chains; 4 autosocks; 4 tire cables 0.415 or greater; auto chains or sanders covering 4 drive tires. * IF there are chains on the 2 outside tires of one of the drive axles, any type of tire cable may be used to cover the other 2 tires. Autosocks may also be used to cover the other 2 tires. Autosocks and tire cables CAN’T be used together

Old Timer once told the Orientation Class that if ya need throw chains ya probably shouldn't be driving in that son..

But when I was running "West Coast" over the Rockies "legally" ya gotta have em in your possession Alotta states whether it's snowing or not..

Back up in Minnesota them people were good ..

If conditions was that bad and ya didn't Feel "Safe" they'd push the appointment out let me "Wait" it Out until it passes and they e plowed salted highway as opposed to Jacknife in a Ditch

Some of these other "Companies" though don't give a "Rats Rear-End" just want that frieght "Delivered" even if ya gotta White Knuckle" 25/30 Mph a whole day

Just because the chain up lights are on doesn’t necessarily mean that conditions are really bad. I’ve had to throw chains countless times, only to wear them down on wet pavement because the DOT wanted to err on the side of caution due to high traffic volumes up over Snoqualmie and Cabbage.

One company that I worked for (it was an awesome company don't get me wrong)
One company I worked for would put a crate of chains in the trailer just for Colorado.
I said to the boss that I needs chains.
He said you got chains in the trailer.
Ya, but those chains will not fit the super singles you got on this truck.

I've walked away from companies that insisted on using those super singles. They are friggin horrible in the rain when they become more than half worn.

I never chained up in my life ...

But many Truck Units different companies had the chains on the trucks just be "Legal" running West ..

Once I was on like a 3 day weekend layover was "Bored" went back into the Carriers Website for Heck A It n received the Chain Video .

Welp just for "Fun" at the Truckstop was gonna Thow Chains in the Parking Lot so I could know how do that if I "ever" need too..

Plenty of Rusty Chains hanging off the sides but no wrench..

Younger though I was abit more "Motivated" actually kept 2 tool boxes in my belly box versus today just "Basic Tools" and Ratchet Set in a Duffel Bag strapped to passenger seat nowadays as you've seen in my videos..

This other driver saw me screwing around with em and was on break..

But he had the same key or right wrench my issued chains..

Then in my tool box had Hex Key exact size...

Then after going back into his cab afew Beers & laughing his ass off said someday boy you'll really need to "Chain Up" lemme show ya..

So layed out the pee stained parking lot how to roll over abot and next and next..

He showed me to in his box abuncha Bungee Cords put around wheels Incase chains snap so they don't destroy your tires..

Even all that I've never thrown a "Chain" to this Day
