CDL license renewal extension

So is it true that the two-month extension the government gave us for expired licenses stops at the end of August?

I don’t know, I may have either confused the guy or maybe the guy just didn’t know at all but since here in Oklahoma, we have to go to a special driver license testing place to pay for and show our two proofs of residency to renew our licenses and then before, after going there, we would go to any local license plate tag agency and they had the machine that would print to your license on the spot.

Well, the person I was talking about that I talk to at one of the drivers license testing facility never said anything about this extension ending on a certain date, he just told me that whatever the date is when your license expires, you have two months worth of a grace period to renew your license which made sense to me because since all of our agencies like that are so behind from being short staffed and overworked because of this Covid shit, you can no longer just walk right in somewhere and renew your license; you have to go on the website and actually pay a small fee to schedule an appointment at any of the places but it even says at the top of the page that any appointments made are going to be guaranteed to be two months out to renew which kind of screws anybody if they don’t know this and their license expires within however much time is left between right now and the end of August.

Even though I just learned about this yesterday, I am in the clear because my license expired at the end of June but when I made my appointment to get my license renewed, two months from that time put me at August 24 so I’ll have my new license before the end of August but a buddy of mine that I work with, I helped him set his appointment up about two weeks ago but the earliest they could see him is around the end of September which means if we only have until the end of August, what’s he supposed to do if he can’t even be able to be seen until almost a month after this supposed deadline?

Thanks.

What is he supposed to do? Don't get caught driving. You will be driving without a CDL
I realize that but pretty much the purpose of my question was asking for clarification of this extension cutoff and if they plan to extend this period past the end of august.

Florida doesn't grant extensions. I wish they would on physicals. I hate those roadside medical stands. But you can set up your CDL renewal up to a year prior to it's expiration and not lose any of the current time allotted.

I just made an appointment to get my CDL redone because the idiot doctor filled in the Intrastate box instead of Interstate and I currently have that restriction. Plus it's going to cost me $25 for the replacement. Fortunately, I don't operate out of Florida anyway. But, I still don't want any restriction like that.

I thought the extension on expired drivers licenses was a federal thing, not a state thing…

I avoid on trying to paint myself as a slacker. Keep it all current and stay off of the radar.
What are you talking about? I found out almost a month ago that there was a two month extension on our CDL expiration but I had no idea that was only up until the end of August. I never read or seen anything that talked about that and besides, here in Oklahoma, the only way to get in the place that we have to go to renew our licenses is by appointment only and in order to make that appointment, it’s an automatic two month leadtime so if you don’t even know to look for this information, you’re kind of screwed which is a load crap. Apparently the FMCSA has done a shitty job of getting this information out so that people know about it early enough.

Only waiver I am finding is a medical card waiver.

Better go read that again. Because it’s all about medical waivers and downgrading your cdl to a regular license

I didn’t read the whole thing but up at the top of that PDF it doesn’t say nothing about medical cards but it says right there in black-and-white print that the FMCSA permits, but does not require the states to honor the validity CDL‘s and learner permits.

You’re right…

reading the actual text is irrelevant.

Of course, reading the actual text from the FMCSA is like reading something in Latin. Does the above link do a better job showing what it seems like to me?

I'm reading nothing about 2 months. Just an Aug 31 deadline.

IOW they were letting you skate if it expired between March and August. After that it's on you.

The shutdown was almost a year and a half ago. I think that's enough time to learn how to plan ahead.

There probably never was an actual 2 month extension, except for one in a rudimentary sense to where if your license expired after March 2021, you had until the end of August 2021 to get it renewed.

But plan ahead? Sure, if you know you needed to do that. I didn’t know…. My boss didn’t know and neither did our DOT compliance lady. But there is at least a light at the end of the tunnel, though, for those who didn’t know. Just found out the department of public safety is having a license renewal blitz up in the city that takes walk-ins for license renewals and med card stamping that my buddy’s gonna have to take next Friday off to go too.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I've held a drivers license since 1974. I always knew when it was going to expire. I knew to study for the test(s), make the appointment as needed and go from there. How in the last second you can realize that your license is expiring when your livelihood depends on that license is beyond my comprehension.

Like I said before, keep it all current and fly under the radar. Don't stand out and wait for them to call you on it. I have 8 pieces of mandatory ID that I absolutely have to maintain to gain access to various accounts. If you don't have that ID on your person and up to date, don't even try and drive up to the guard shack.

It's all your responsibility, no one else's.

That’s just it, all the way up until this Covid shit, you really didn’t have to renew your license a month or two months before it expired unless it was just a special occasion to where you knew you weren’t gonna be able to be there in time like if you were on the road or out if the country or so but because of this pandemic, it’s got everything so backed up which is why they gave us this extension in the first place so don’t try to compare everything in the past to this year because this year’s a special, totally screwed up year.

Like I said, I didn’t even know that there was an extension in the first place until I called up my local drivers license testing place which is the place I have to visit to renew my CDL and to have my medical card entered into the system when one of the people working there told me all about this extension and said that because everything is so backed up due to Covid, shutdowns and quarantines, the only way to even get in there is you have to make an appointment that’s guaranteed to be two months out so again, if I, or nobody else even knows about this how are we to be expected to find out about this shit if we don’t even know it’s like that in the first place? I’m sorry if you disagree but I kind of think that’s what our DOT lady is supposed to do as part of her job duties is to find this stuff out, especially with this pandemic going on right now.

You're trying to lay blame on someone else for your lack of responsibility. I renewed mine in May. It was to expire in June. In February, I made the appointment. I tried in December but the appointment calendar didn't reach that far into the future. No one had to remind me.

If you are out on the road that long that you don't get home to renew your license in the timely fashion, I'd be looking for something else to do unless you are knocking down $200k per year. My physical expires in 13 days. That appointment has been on the books for 120 already. You have to look out for yourself, not depend on others. They can't even take care of themselves let alone worry about you.

I'm leaving it at that. Otherwise, we're :deadhorse:

They gave the extension because everything was literally shut down and it was IMPOSSIBLE to renew. The medical was because they expected doctors to be fully booked solid and it be IMPOSSIBLE to renew.

Not just difficult or delayed.

I’m not necessarily trying to lay blame in a sense because yes, this stuff is our responsibility but it does kind of help when you pay people to take care of all the DOT compliance stuff to stumble upon this pertinent information so that they can share it with everybody else but let me ask you; since your license expired this year as well when everything is so screwed up, how were you able to find about this extension in the first place? How did you find out that this year, you can’t screw around and wait until you’re really close to your expiration date to go renew your license when you could’ve gotten away with doing that last year, or the year before when stuff wasn’t screwed up?

I got lucky because since my license expired the end of June like yours, I just so happened to make a phone call to this place to ask about verification on which paperwork that I need that will suffice for proof of residency and when I finally got through to one of these places, that’s when the guy told me all about this extension and everything else and I had enough time to make my appointment two months in advance so I can get my license renewed before the August 31st deadline but look dude, I’m not expecting you to feel sorry for me, I’m just curious how you were so lucky to find out about all this before it was too late because if my license would’ve expired the end of last month, I’d be in the same boat with the guy that I’m talking about and would be having to make a trip up to the city where they have a special place you can go to to get this taken care of that’s only been going on since the middle of July so that I can get this done before the deadline.
