Autonomous Trucks May Soon Take Jobs From 500,000 Drivers

Yeah, I'm not posting link to talk about this, but a billion or so websites have capitalized on this statement and have been basically posting their version of the same exact article so they can make it there own. Not justifying any of them with a link back from here.

Anyhow, I guess this hit the news cycle 3 days ago, but since I'm not paying much attention to news.....

I simply went looking for the latest on autonomous trucks after picking up a load yesterday in Tucson, AZ. You know how once in a while you see one the autonomous trucks running down the highway? I felt like I was in the minority yesterday there were so many running up and down the street. All OTR trucks, and it looked like someone was in the driver seat of each one I noticed before it got past me. All TuSimple trucks.

I checked and I was about 5 miles from there headquarters, so they either use the street I was on for lots of test driving, or they are running freight out of a warehouse there locally. Or both.

Nothing earth shattering about this thread, just seeing so many of them on the road in one area got me to wondering just how close they were getting to becoming a little more mainstream. What have you heard?

Not their headquarters, I guess that is in California. Not sure what this place is, other than a test facility or terminal. checked the reviews, and apparently they provide food for their employees. I may need to relocate for the free food.

I haven't heard anything about real progress on autonomous but I haven't heard any real progress on electric either.

So I dunno. I've never seen one out here. Too many obstacles I suppose. Maybe that says it all.

Bring this on. There’s a pile of subpar truck drivers that need to be wiped out of this industry. Quality operators have nothing to fear; that is, if they’re willing to move to segments that still require a driver.

Autonomous will get the dry van and reefer segment. But, there will always be room for a good heavy haul/specialized, tanker operator, logger and others that will never be able to utilize autonomy.
