ADOT made the announcement on June 7, calling this a temporary solution until they can get the final 2 lane stretch of that area of interstate widened to 3 lanes. The rule is to attempt to reduce accidents along that stretch of highway.
The plans are already in place to begin the widening, but the actual work won't begin until sometime in 2023, and could be finished by 2026.
One has to wonder if the need is so bad (and it is), why don't they start the work immediately? I guess one also has to wonder why they widened interstate 10 between Tucson and Casa Grande before Phoenix and Casa Grande.... Regardless, the work should be happening immediately, if not sooner.
The President of the Arizona Trucking Association calls the decision to restrict trucks to the right lane during this time "nothing short of stupid". Freight Relocators would tend to agree. Herding trucks into the right lane in the name of safety is anything but safe. ADOT, you made a very stupid decision here.
