4 people are dead in the Colorado pileup. A truck driver faces vehicular homicide charges

He was panic steering on the downhill curves. Almost ran two cars off the road because he was not in complete control of the truck.
This is true, but it would have been easier to drift to the outside of that curve and hit the ramp.

That company has been nailed for brake violations repeatedly, and for drivers unable to understand English. It's a fair bet he couldn't read the signs to know the escape ramp was there. That driver is going to jail, and the company owner should, too. He won't have anything after the trial lawyers get done with him anyways.

He was certainly panicking but when he almost steered that into that pickup on the left he was definitely steering, so I’m not seeing any loss of control...

Controlling foolishly maybe...

Also, I’m wondering now if this guy “from Texas” even has a legit CDL and is actually supposed to be in the US.

What born Texan, or even legal immigrant speaks ZERO English?

I read somewhere that he's Cuban and legally here with a green card.

Did he not speak English?

Well they're definitely not going to mention it on the mainstream media if he doesn't speak English but here's an indication:

These are screenshots from a video of a court hearing. That guy was talking quietly into his ear the whole time the prosecutor lady was talking. So I'm assuming he's a translator.

Someone at "Fox 31 Denver" has probably already gotten in trouble for accidentally posting the video.

That guy is a translator, but that doesn't mean that he can't understand English. He probably speaks Spanish as a first language. With what he's facing, I wouldn't blame him for wanting it translated into the language he understands best.

If he isn't fluent enough in English to read those signs he ignored, whoever put him in that truck should be charged with reckless homicide. His employer, the insurance agent who approved him, the guy at the DMV, everyone.

Yeah they will, and they did.

He was able to speak "limited" English, but the chose to use a translator. I'm sure they did that to make sure there was no confusion in what he was being charged for. The last thing they want to do is go through the entire process and have it thrown out because he was unable to understand what he was facing.

All that said, I still feel like the guy had no idea what he was doing in the mountains, or possibly driving a truck in general. I don't think he did anything out of selfishness, I get the feeling he went into a complete panic and didn't know what to do.

As for the runaway truck ramp, he probably had no clue what it was. I didn't know what one was until I started driving, and given the assumption that he could probably at best recognize a few English words, had no clue what the ramp was for either.

It's almost like he got the keys, sent out west, then found himself coming back through the mountains where he had no business being.

If anything, it should finally be understood that we cannot be giving people licenses when they can't speak, understand, and read basic English.

It should also be understood that these driving exams taken to get a license should be taken seriously, because we all know they are not. When I surrendered my license for a while, I got it back by paying a small amount of money to rent a small single axle day cab with 27 foot trailer behind it. I was taken on the exact route that I would be given my test on and walked through the entire procedure. I did all of this in an automatic (which I understand now causes restrictions in our license, but it didn't back then). A friend of mine has been studying to get his CDL for a short time now. He just went the same route as I mentioned. He drove to a place that offered a two day class, which basically means renting a small truck to take the test. Tested out in a simple 7 speed single axle daycab with a short trailer behind it. I'm sure, like in my case, the examiner knows the instructor and just basically passes people through without paying much attention.

Obviously, this guy is likely headed to jail. I'm not sure I agree with it, but can't say I would stand to oppose it either. Only he knows where his head was when all this happened. I don't think he was putting his life before others, I simply thing he totally lost it in the mountains.

I do think that those responsible for him getting licensed and sending him off in a truck need to be held just as accountable as he is being held. We need to put a stop to half ass companies being allowed to employ inexperienced drivers and sending them out completely unsupervised in areas where they need to be taught how to properly handle a truck. We need to put a stop to CDL licenses being handed out to people who are not ready to operate a truck safely in all climates and regions that they will be operating in.

At 23 years old he's just as responsible as the people who put him in that truck. He should understand the physics involved in a heavy truck rolling downhill. I learned that shit when I was ten years old.

This sounds a LOT like the situation that happened in Humboldt. That guy got put in front of 140,000 lb b trains with ZERO experience. The difference is in the states you point out lack of English and qualifications they're already half cocked to bury even the license examiners under the jail and hang the driver You point out the obvious here; you're "racist".

You’re still considered racist here for stating things like that. But when people bleed. It creates a complete lynch mode for the ones the media say are the cause. Where as the Canadian spin is far more liberal(judging by what y’all posted). They don’t want the head on a pike like in the US, it seems the Canada government is more about the rehab when the rural folks are more about retribution. And it’s kind of like that here larger city’s are about rehab, smaller make them pay mentality. The reason they are lynching this guy is because he was in a rig, the alien card May play in his favor later on though.

You see thing is though, you can take the American out of America but.....well you know the rest.

I wanna see some heads on spikes damn it!

People are asking if he had brakes or not. One thing that I don't see him doing is ever trying his brakes. Whether they work or not, his trailer brake lights would be lighting up if he was trying to stop. I didn't see once where they came on.
