2018 gardening thread

Three cucumber plants and I've had 'em coming out my ears. And they're huge, too. Boston Picklers are supposed to be four or five inches long. I have to cut them up to fit them into a half gallon jar. I've done four gallons (eight jars) of spears and two gallons of slices in quarts. And there are more coming on.

A lot of tomatoes came ripe all at the same time and the carrots needed to come out, so I made juice out of them, kind'a like V-8. I also added some cucumber, celery, onion, garlic, couple of fresh herb sprays and a few chiles. Final yield one and a half gallons. Most will be frozen because I didn't use canning methods.

Chiles were kind of lame this year. Serranos and jalapenos on the small side and not very spicy.

Purple carrots make excellent food coloring.

that juice sounds good

our garden was about a D+ this year
tomatoes so so
cukes and peppers fizzled out
popcorn hung in there for a small crop

the soil has never been planted and that spot wasn`t too good
I went down below it near a branch and put in my cabbage and greens and they seem to be doing fantanstic

i picked 4 more tomatoes..then there was 2 more, but they were rotted away..at least this year, i got tomatoes, and NONE of them were eaten by the squirrels. but there are only about 6 more on the plant. basil plant and parsley are dying off as well. i yanked up the green cubanelle peppers after i took about 2 dozen off.

I’m not sure if my Lima’s are gonna make it. I put the seeds in late because the soil temp stayed low because of the weather. And with this wacky weather we’ve been getting lately I don’t think it’s looking good. I might have to buy a couple bushels. We’ll see what happens.

i only got a few more tomatoes. most are still medium green in color. if they do not start showing signs or turning red, i will pick them, and give the green ones away to a guy at the gas station that loves green tomatoes. then that plant is done...the basil is so-so in the leaves, and the parsley as well, any day now, i'll yank those out..

but i still have lots of flowers. those will last up until the first frost, maybe longer, as they did in the past.

Fried green tomatoes brother:thumbsup: @Blood knows!

my fall garden is doing a lot better than my other one
my cabbage is growing like crazy along with my collards
the Kale,Mustard greens, and turnips are coming along slowly but nicely

My tomatoes are done. We got cool spell that lasted a few days along with some rain. That was just too much for them.
all i got left is some parsley, as far the edibles...now i got all my geraniums, mums, and begonias, and other hanging flowers.

not sure right now, if when the geraniums die off, do i want to plow them under, of yank'em out and garbagize them...

well, that time of year again, to start the fall yard/garden clean up.. i have been find moss growing on my soil like never before. even in areas of my garden, that get sun all day long. so yesterday, i scraped off some of that soil, and put it aside.

question, if i let that soil dry out, can i re-use that soil, or should i just throw it away..??

we have had a very high humidity summer, can that cause some moss species to grow?

some google searching, and i am not finding any inclusive thoughts on that. lime does not kill moss, i found that out.

i did add "some lime" this past spring, didn't really need it though, but the geraniums are growing like wildfires in CA,

today, i was going to rent out a chain saw, and cut down to a lower level the arborvate i have growing as a bushline.. it ain't much to rent out a chain saw..

however, with winter coming, i'd be thinking this might kill off the bushline. maybe ill do this in the spring, when it will be warmer, and the arborvate can grow over the newly cut line?

gonna be spending a lot more time than normal today out there, got bro-in-law to help...(sarcastically laughing out loud at that).

You're not alone. But other than tearing down my garden trellises and leaf clean up I'm letting everything go until spring. My back patio, which is exposed aggregate concrete is turning black from all the moisture this summer. I power washed both the patio and the deck last year and they are both a mess. I'll power wash in the spring screw it.

Another concern I have is firewood. I gotta order some here soon and most times that stuff sits out so I'm wondering how wet the wood will be. I probably should have bought some earlier and covered it but it takes room up in my driveway so it's an inconvenience to do that.

I don't know, pretty nasty summer IMO. And it's foggy and drizzling now.

yeah, i even have some green moss color showing on the concrete area in front of my garden..never saw that before either.

that, i can simply use the "spray and forget" (or wet and forget)... stuff that i have.

I have neglected my garden this year, with all of the other hullaballoo going on. Next year's garden may not be as gorgeous as last years because I'll be starting out fresh in different ground about 45 minutes south and 800 ft higher in altitude. The ground there has been hayed for the last 20-odd years and I don't think much has been added back to the soil, so there's a lot of work to do.

This year's garden was ready to pop, but I just didn't work it as hard as I should have.

Got some great pickles, though
