2018 gardening thread

we usually plant some German Johnson tomatoes
the yellow belles bushs are blooming and the temps have been in the upper 70`s this week and hit 80 earlier this week.
lows in the 60`s.
nice but winter ain`t over yet

My garlic (that I planted last October from seeds off last year's crop) is coming up. So, second-generation immigrants and thank you, @Duck for the first-generation seeds. Anyway, I was a little disappointed with the bulbs last year, and I think I remember Ducky saying the same thing. But a little research, and this strain of garlic is supposed to have just a few cloves per bulb. It's some kind of porcelain variety, not the type you'll get in the store and that's why it tastes so good. Here's a picture of one variety of porcelain garlic from a professional grower:

This is what my bulbs looked like last year. They were perfect. Can't wait until this year's crop is ready.

You just reminded me @Injun that my garlic are up as well. Bout 4”. I believe they all came up. I have to peel back the mulch to see for sure. (I used the dead Lima bean plants for topping/mulching the beds when I put the bulbs in last November.) I just noticed last weekend actually.

I'm going to go out on a limb here...
and say that it's been well over a year since your bulbs looked perfect.
:biggrin-2:

Not that I'm judging, mind you...
I've got a zig-zag scar several inches either side of my belly-button that's going to make everybody laugh when I wear my speedo.
:mad-97:
Not that they didn't laugh before...
but now I might have a lawsuit!!

i had planted 15 garlic before winter hit, covered them with 2 layers of burlap. i can see where at least 10 are sprouting thru. the others maybe sprouting up thru the first layer, i hope.

I cleaned out the strawberry bed yesterday, got all the dead leaves out, trimmed the plants and added a couple of bags of African Violet mix around the bases of the plants where they'd pushed up out of the ground and sprouted roots. And I moved my baby cedar trees out where they'll get more sun. They were just tiny seedlings last fall, so I put them up next to the house to protect them from a hard freeze.

The warehouse I work out of gets all types of planting soil in. As happens sometimes, some of the bags split open and we can't sell them. When a split bag is found or returned from a customer, it gets thrown onto a damaged goods pallet. I bought that pile of miscellaneous bags of dirt for $100. I got something like 30 bags of various potting soils, compost, starting mixes and manure. Purchased all separately, that stuff would have been around $350. The only thing wrong with it was the bags had holes in them. We also have a couple of full pallets of Sunshine #6 with the same issue. I might be getting one of them as well. That would fill my garden the rest of the way up.

at my local Lowes, i look for split bags, or ripped bags. i get that product for half off. in fact, what Lowe's does is, they tape it up, leave it on display and take off half price. hey, it's dirt, not like it's a dozen eggs with 11 missing for full price..>!!!!

I got some really nice topsoil from Lowes last year, six split bags for a dollar per bag.

When I worked for the city we would take what they called yard waste, Take that to a place where they would grind it all up and then to another place where they would do what they do and bag it all up and sell to the stores to sell it.

We would bring back a small amount like a truckload and the citizens could come and take whatever amount they could fit in their pickup truck for free. That was only open on saturday mornings but it was the same stuff they sell in the stores.

Here strawberry season is late May-June. I would imagine it would start earlier in the great Northwet. When do you get strawberries?

End of May through beginning of August if we can keep the squirrels out of them. We're still getting frost and there's still snow on top of the Micas.

do you use netting? i tried that more than once, i'd plant the strawberries in large pots, entirely wrapped that in netting, damned rodents still got at them.

growing them on top of the 2nd story porch works best, so i thought, till one day one damned nut job, climbed up the porch support post......

I built a cage around them with rabbit wire.

Our strawberry bed is in one of the aquaponic beds with expanded shale about 3 feet off the ground.

We had one of the small greenhouses up over it but the wind got it last fall. Maybe we'll just rig some netting over it this year.

I'd o take a pic but my sweats are in the wash so I borrowed a pair of pimp-hand's.
They're tiger stripes and I don't want the neighbors to see me!!
😆
