2017 gardening thread.

I had a delayed laugh. It took a second to get it. :D

Went to a local produce stand and picked another cantaloupe (I couldn't pass it up she's a beaut!) and they had yellow watermelon! I used to pick them on a farm I worked on when I was a teenager. Ain't seen one for years cause most people like the "authentic" red watermelon.

Anybody that's anybody that knows anything about watermelon knows that the yellows are superior in both texture and flavor. :harumph:

They had limas setting out and I asked for a bushel price. They'll call me later for that. I planted six beds of limas but the way this garden has treated me this year I'm going to have a back up plan. I'm a Lima bean eating mofo so I'd rather have too many than not enough.

Got two more lopes but the plant is dying. I think these cool nights are taking their toll.

There's two more on the vine but I don't know if they'll ripen before the plant is dead.

just ran 2 bushels of assorted sauce tomatoes thru the food mill dam am I glad that thing has a motor on it,
tomorrow going to can some of Mrs. Wages pizza sauce and chilli base, they go into pint jars,
the rest will go into quarts kinda a as a cross between tomato juice and sauce.
i now have 14 quarts of garlic dills on the shelf, 21 pints of lima's, 24 bags of vacuum sealed corn in the freezer, and here in a few weeks the layer hens are headed to the amish to be butchered for stewing chickens and will be put up in pint jars,[ and before anyone says anything I could butcher them myself but for a buck and a half each the Amish can have the mess.]

I already have 4 hunters that are going to bring their deer meat to me to be made up into jerky the deal there is they have to do the grinding and i will supply the spices and dehydrator and we split the finished product 2/3 for them and 1/3 for me.

yeah, my garden is petering out. i still have maybe all of 4 eggplants, and maybe about 6 tomatoes, that the squirrels ain't got to yet.

my Italian green peppers are coming to an end as well.

the basil is wilting, still edible, but the leaves are smaller, parsley is still going strong though.

i have already pulled up a couple of the pepper plants, not producing, so get rid of them. i cut back the long branches of the tomato plants that are taking the energy away for the rest still growing.

over all, not a good year for the garden, thanks in part to a very lousy springtime rainy season.
