Something big is eating my tomatoes.

And the weather has cooled off. Night time lows in the high 50's.

There goes everything. I need a quarter stick of dynamite. :explode:

a neighbor has a brilliant idea for starting trees, he is trying to be the Johnny Appleseed of American chestnut trees.
Why chestnut trees?

I'd like to be the Johnny Appleseed of whatever the hell kind of fruit trees can grow in this zone, among other species of trees and therefore in low light, in soft soil, and survive seasonal floods..

Cuz I'd plant them all over the place along the Kankakee River so I don't have to pack as much crap when I go camping. ;)
Earwigs are creepy.
I hate those damn things. Anywhere it's dark and moist, they'll be a bunch of them. They look like little scorpions or something.

my problems was the squirrels eating mine. summana beach would make a near perfect cut ring all around one. then another, then another..

a good cage trap and a 55 gallon garbage can filled with water, cured that problem.

because the American chestnut pretty died off and he is doing his part to bring em back
Some guy bought about 50 acres about a half a mile down the road.

He planted it full of oak trees... Spaced about as tightly as a commercial tree farm would plant them knowing they'll be dug up and sold before they get big... But he's not going to do that.

I never met him but 2 neighbors did.

Neighbors said the guy is a "bat shit crazy, foaming at the mouth, radical left wing extremist environmental nut case" or something along the lines..

The guy worked at the coal plant in Joliet and retired, and felt guilty for working for coal energy so he planted all those trees for something like carbon credits except in real life.. He's not selling carbon credits, he's doing "his part" or something.

He did no research at all, apparently..

Planted them way too close together for adult oak trees, and has not done any maintenance at all. He doesn't mow the weeds that grow between the rows, doesn't cut out the dead ones, etc. And I think he spent about $2000 on "No hunting" signs.

My neighbor Jimmy saw him over there once and walked over to ask some basic questions and the guy went on a rant on everything from global warming to capitalism and animal rights and even threatened to kill Jimmy if he ever sees him, or anyone hunting in his patch of baby oak trees.

That was over ten years ago and the trees are still barely taller than the weeds.

My dad accidentally picked this cantaloupe when he was trying to roll it over to check the bottom. He called me earlier this week and told me what happened. I told him I'd bring a knife with me on Saturday and cut it up for him. Not too bad for a cantaloupe that was picked early and it actually had a lot of flavor.

My dad suffered a severe brain injury in 2004. Although he survived he lost a lot of brain function and needed to be put in an assisted living place (he hates it) And the last couple of months he has been deteriorating quickly. Possible Alzheimer's. I've been planting tomatoes at his place (it's like an apartment and it's on ground level) for the last few years. But this year I planted the tomato plant and a cantaloupe cause that's one of his favorites.

So I cut the melon up and we both ate a little. Pretty cool father/ son moment.
