EC's Going For It

I trauma dumped my concerns to the seller on FB messenger about the key fob and possible timing chain and whatnot and he said "make me an offer."

So now I dunno if he's desperate to unload a pretty turd or what.

If I had to go small car, it would be a Toyota or Honda and I hate saying this, but Subaru is an extremely dependable car. Especially the SUV's.
It just seems like when anyone sees a Subaru they scream out GAY!!!. Fine, so be it. I'd rather drive my vehicle than have it sit in the shop most of its life.

Nothing planned for me to do tomorrow. I guess there isn't enough work to go around now. Train looked like a JB Hunt Special when I was in there earlier.

Don't know if it's a one off or we actually hit the wall for the year.

I got my insurance payout for the day cab today so that's cool.

Tomorrow will be oil change, grease job, and fuel filters (aka PM) day as long as there isn't a blizzard.

Might even make a run for 4 new air bags. If I don't change them, at least I'll have them.

Lowballed the VW guy and told him I'm off tomorrow if he wants to do the deal otherwise he can sit on it and take his time deciding. I'll buy it at the price I offered as long as the mileage is about the same even if it's in the spring. I don't seem to need a car anymore since the truck is starting acceptably good again.

It's a nice looking car but it's not a car I absolutely have to have. If I want to satisfy my car stick shift urges I can go get a Camaro or a Mustang or Miata or something. Otherwise I have the old truck.

A Toyota or Honda as a beater is my ideal but everyone around here wants too much for them and I'm definitely not willing to go far to fetch a cheaper one.

This VW is about 12 miles from my house. He said his dad works at the Mack plant so he also had a hand in building my truck.

Today was a little odd kinda. Mostly normal but I detoured to a little truck stop that was saved in my Google maps I think because they take our fuel card. I didn't go in and I didn't get fuel, I just wanted somewhere that wasn't the shoulder or ramp to nuke a mom meal and stew for a minute.

It wasn't completely devoid of spots full but it was a lot more full than I expected for mid afternoon. I snuck in between the scale and another truck. Don't know if I was in a proper spot or not, but I wasn't there long. There were a few good options if I was going to stay there for a 10.

I need to find more of these types of places. It doesn't need to be fancy and I don't need any kind of corporate approval. I just need to know it exists.

I have a whole list of shit for them to do since it's already going to be down. Stuff I'd do myself if it wasn't the worst time of the year to be a mechanic outside.

My theory is that it's better to pay their insane rates to get it all done when freight is slow, then have a truck with the most possible uptime when freight gets kinda hot again.

I would be in my shop hibernating and doing all said maintenance if said shop actually existed.

Looking at a maintenance chart straight from Mack and they're making me want to DIY less and less. I'm in the "normal" range for service based on my MPG and that's 60k for the fuel filters and oil.

That's only 2x a year max for me and I'm thinking it's not worth the hassle because it doesn't save enough time or money. Especially when you add in the nuisance of disposal of the old oil. Transferring it from the drain pain into jugs then giving it to someone.

For the day cab it was something I needed to do more often, and I preferred to do it on a random day to avoid downtime.

I can only relate to this by my car. I found it is not worth the hassle to buy the oil and filter and change the oil and then dispose of the used oil. It makes sense to me to just pay my mechanic to do it.

I find it mostly annoying to transfer 11 gallons of oil from the pan back into the jugs.

The pickup truck I can pick up the pan and dump it but 11 gallons is too heavy, therefore transfer pumps and that whole mess.

It was worth the hassle when I had to do it more frequently. But now I'm thinking nah let someone else do it all.

Happy to report the pickup still had some crank in 'er for today. Enough to get started without a boost.

I gotta run to the dealer for a fuel filter before I'm comfortable starting the Mack up to get it down for the oil change. According to my weather app it's
19°F with a feels like of 9°F.

Went to the dealer for the fuel filter. The secondary isn't a spin on anymore. It's a cartridge. I had stocked up on spin ones for the day cab but they're all useless to me now, at least for now.

It's cheaper than the OEM spin on but not cheaper than the Luberfiner spin on. Not expensive enough to kill me financially but kind of disappointing that aftermarket ones I've found so far are actually more expensive than the dealer. Amazon no-names are $40 and the dealer only charged me $30.

It seemed easier to do than the old spin on and it primed easier so its kind of a net win I think.

The Mack service chart says they're good for up to 60k intervals. I wasn't getting that out of the spinnies. We'll see if I get that out of this. If so, that's even more of a win crawling under there 3x less and paying half as much for filters over the same 60k.

Dealer was telling me if they didn't PM my truck then that means the previous dealer did it right before they got a hold of it, so I actually have a little more time on my oil than I thought. Which is good because they don't have an opening for my oil change until Friday. That means I can run until then instead of taking the downtime L.

Told my travel agent and she's got some work in mind for me already for tomorrow.

We ain't exactly busy which makes it even more important to take what I can when I can.

Today was wierd. It was a time sink but I can't really pinpoint anything specific for it.

My first load was bobtail to the yard for an empty to go get a 2 hour live load and bring it back, then I bobtailed to Winchester for a ready pickup.

Then I ran out of time to do the last pickup which was only like 30 miles each way from the rail.

One of those WTF happened days.

I had to cut bait because A) I have a fundamental problem with parking less than 30 miles from my house for a 10 and B) if I did park for a 10 it would make getting back from tomorrow in time to get my lazy ass up early enough for my dealer appointment impossible. And I want this damned drain plug out.

I've had mostly awesome days since coming back with this new truck and this is the first day I was genuinely pissed off. So I guess that's actually not so bad after all.
