I like to tell them I'm not a sir my dad was a sir or as some senior enlisted would say I'm not a sir I work for a living.

I got in the habit of calling anyone, older or younger than I, Sir because of two things.
1) That was the way I was taught by my Dad. He was a Staff Sergeant, U.S Army, retired and a Master Sergeant, U.S.M.C Retired.
2) It's a hell of a lot easier than trying to remember names when you get to be an old fart.
