Why did you become a trucker?

I became a truck driver because my father was a truck driver and he provided a lot of his knowledge on how to make the best possible earning from it. Now that I've been using the Next Trucking app, I have a lot more flexibility in where I go. The app allows you to choose your rates and routes; so now there's no need to shrug when you're off to a city and/or state you don't want to go to. Let's just say, I take lots of trips to Illinois and Florida and I'm content!

For 20 years I've worked in construction on and around heavy equipment. In 2000 I got sick of waiting on my equipment so I got my cdls so I could just take it with me. I always said I'm not a truck driver, I'm an operator that can drive truck. I'm a good operator but theres just no respect and the pay isnt there anymore in equipment. Also I kept ending up unemployed because noone around Chattanooga seems to know how to run a const co. After getting my tank n haz to drive fuel truck and then a month later they layed us all off i figured id try trucking full time. I miss operating equipment and hauling it but now im in a heated cab with Windows and work rain or shine. The pay is about the same but its steady so think I'll stick with being a trucker for a while.

Very few truck drivers drive because they love the lifestyle. Just a bunch of losers stuck in a job that has no rung up and no exit.

I'm not responding to start an argument but I take exception to being called a loser...I choose driving all those years ago out of choice...I choose it because it was what I wanted to do...I choose it because I wanted the Lifestyle that went with it...I had other Qualifications that I turned my back on to pursue my Dream and though retired now I'd do it all again given the opportunity...I also drove Coaches and Chauffeured Celebrities around and still do the odd Coach-work...my point is,anyone working for a living cannot be a loser irrespective of how menial a task he/she thinks it may be...to me a loser is one who sits on their Ass all day/everyday complaining of having nothing to do...

I'm retired out of necessity, after 4 Hip Operations-Arthritis and a Heart complaint I'm not Truckin' material anymore but today I'm Mortgage free-raised a Family-Grandparents to 4 lovely Grandchildren...always had Food on the Table/Heat in the House thanks to being a Trucker...I worked hard and took pride in my Job so forgive me if your comments p---ed me off big time...

Then with respect to the comment I made you are one of the few. There's nothing wrong with being among the few, the exception. But for the purposes of the original question, I thought it important to mention that many and most of the truckers I've met fall in the category of people who resorted to trucking as plan B through F.

Have you asked yourself why? Due diligence. It's important. Not job hopping. Also important. Sure, many idiots can drive a truck. Can they do it right? No they can't. I've got bad news for everyone who thinks that nobody can make it. That's bullshit. If it continues to be bad for someone, it's their fault. All you need is a year to hitter out who to work for and more importantly, how to work. There's no excuses anymore. The resources are at your fingertips.
doing it right to qualify them for the snooty driver award is one thing. Doing it well enough to keep their job? Well there's 30 million drivers who can do that. It's nothing special. Maybe they're rude and unrefined. But they haven't been fired or had their CDL revoked. So they're doing it well enough.

If you don't want to start an argument don't try to communicate with me in that manner. I made a claim that a large percentage of drivers get into trucking and stay in trucking for less than optimistic reasons. You counter my claim of an overall trend by offering your one personal experience as if you yourself outweigh every other person who has an experience in line with my claim. Let's face it: with rhetoric like that you are not smart enough to be that important.

Make up your mind which reply you want left in...you say one thing in one post then another in a 2nd...Gimme' a break
Please identify the specific phrases in my posts which are mutually exclusive. You seem to be suffering from a false dichotomy. It may be true that you chose, love and succeeded at trucking and life. theres nothing wrong with that. It's also dumb to think that your one anecdote outweighs the vast number of drivers who merely persist at trucking as a plan b to what they used to do or preferred to do. I've not said nobody loves it. Just that most enter trucking because they lost in another arena. Most is not all. And most do not love it.
