great movie, angelina jolie directed it? or produced it.

the guy had died (as i recall) just a short time before the movie premiered.

Yeah she directed it. He did pass just a short time before the movie. I haven’t seen the movie yet though.

I don’t think I have any of those with basic cable. Amazon wants me to pay for it and I don’t think Hulu or Netflix has it

Back to books...

"The Taking of K129" by Josh Dean.

About absconding with a Russian sunken missle submarine, the cover-up so the Soviets wouldn't figure it out.

Ever hear of the "Hughes Glomar Explorer?" They really built it just to go after the K129. In '86, Jack Anderson published a story in the NY Times about all the wasted money, and failure to get the boat.

The CIA (Bush Sr) admitted it was a keystone cop affair, the sub broke in two, and the half with the missles sank back to the bottom of the ocean.

Stupid, bumbling, CIA spies can't do anything right! Or... just maybe...

...in '01, the cold war commission to resolve the fate of missing US and Soviet military personnel gave the personal effects of the entire crew back to the Russians - and the ships bell. That bell was welded into the part of the boat that the CIA claims is at the bottom of the sea.

Gonna be a good book.

That looked interesting. I ordered it from the library. Hasn’t come in yet though.
It's the standard version of what happened. I have another book (extensively footnoted) that has a different conclusion. This book doesn't go into the why of what happened.

They mention the Soviet sailor on the bottom. He's wearing arctic gear, and the flesh is burned away from his skull. Why? It implies that the boat was on the surface when the incident happened... I.e., he was surface watch in the conning tower. How did all the flesh get burned off of his face? There must have been an explosion. Of what?

This is a real curious story - and he doesn't even mention that the beat up bell they recovered was welded I to the conning tower. But the conning tower never made it to the surface according to the author... it's in 16,000' of water. So how did they get it?

Skateboard puller fetched it.

"The Taking of K129" by Josh Dean.

I'm about half way through the book. I have a few other books going and the letters I mentioned above so it's been a slow read. It seems to be filled with a lot of details that don't necessarily pertain to the story but some of it I'm enjoying. The parts about the U2 spy plane and the SR-71 Blackbird I really enjoyed. This wasn't in the book but I've read that when they fuel the Blackbird it will leak fuel until it gets to a specific altitude and the materials expand creating a seal. For a while I was really into going to air shows. I usually went to the shows on military bases to see the Blue Angels. I love feeling the power of those planes engines rumble through my chest. I would always be at show center because that's where the low altitude high speed fly over would happen. He comes from behind the crowd at about fifty feet and 700 mph. He's already in the distance by the time you feel the power or hear the sound. Awesome stuff!
I'm also amazed at the engineering and secrecy that was achieved as well. It was quite feat in itself but then think about the technology they had versus what we have now. I have lasers that I use for walls and ceilings and sometimes I think about past civilizations that did so much without anything we have now a days. The Romans and their aqueduct for one.
The spy stuff is pretty interesting also. I enjoyed the part where he mentions some of the tricks the Russians have used to obtain information.

Overall, so far so good.
