What is your favorite engine? and what engine do you think gets the best fuel mileage

Some guys even like Detroits.....There are studies being done to try and figure out why.
This is from an article in Heavy Duty Trucking magazine. They were testing a new WS with a DD13. This is something to be proud of!

It also said "even after the hill eased to 1% or 2% I couldn't accelerate beyond 55mph which isn't bad with a heavy load" (heavy load was 75-80,000) sign me up!!!

Wonder if that was gross or net weight?...

As for the guy who got worse fuel mileage with the recaps.... that really kinda makes no sense unless they was using a high RR casing...

Hi guys I just wanted to say thanks for all the info. I was just curious on what everyone thought. I have heard about Detroits getting great fuel mileage, cats pull anything, but use a lot of fuel. I have heard good and bad about cummins and in between on fuel mileage. I have no idea about the Volvo VED engines. I have only drove my friends Volvo once he hasn't had any trouble with it. He has 475 HP in it. The only thing he has done was put a turbo in it. it has over 500,000 miles.

500,000 miles eh? Sounds like it is due for an EGR replacement.

Other than for its own trucks which I have yet to see on this side of the pond, has anybody heard of MAN diesels for trucks? I see Neoplan buses and assume that they have MAN engines. Since MAN is actually or essentially a part of or subsidiary of Volkswagen, there would be an existing base for MAN engines for class 8 trucks or perhaps VW could just begin competing with Paccar, International, Mack/Volvo, Benz (Freightliner).

I recall seeing MAN engines (of much more than 1000 hp) in large fishing boats when I lived in Unalaska (Dutch Harbor). I recall that they had a good reputation.

Regardless, has anybody any thoughts?

Anything European is going to be expensive to repair and difficult to get parts for. Especially if it's something not well known on this side of the Pond.

European engines are worse, IMHO. The European engine complicated and capricious.
In Europe, the trucks have smaller load and speed limits. We used the MAN, the European Volvo, Renault and DAF. European Mersedes is bueeeee..

But MAN produce tanks in time of WWII.

What do you guys think of these 2 trucks? I know you can't get under the truck, and look etc... This is what I'm looking at so far. They have lots of miles on them and want quit a bit of money what truck do you guys like better? http://www.truckpaper.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=3675065&dlr=1&pcid=2000956085 Or this one http://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/3134383820.html and I know this guy and he is honest with this truck http://columbus.craigslist.org/for/3131349490.html Sorry there was more than I thought. If you can't click on the links just highlight them and post them up in your url. Thanks again guys just want to know what you think.

There's no price on the one in Indiana with 950K miles on it.

The 1994 with the Detroit...why did it need a head 2,000 miles ago? What other damage was caused by the problem?

The white one...1.3Million miles?? Wow.

The two with prices seem a little overpriced to me. I'd be going over these trucks in person, with a fine toothed comb.

Um, you link to 3 trucks, not 2.

Honestly, the black and lime green truck is quite old, the seller does not state how many miles it has on it, and I've never heard of a dd3470detroit. $22,000 is too high for a 19 year old truck. Maybe Hanadarko has and will weigh in here. (didn't someone already comment about this truck?)

The 2001 Pete has almost a million miles on it, it only has aluminum wheels where it shows (dress up for quick sale) and the asking price is also strangely absent.

The 1999 with 1.3 million miles for $27,000 is way overpriced. Mismatched tires that will need replaced soon, at least one is worn out.

Just my humble opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks guys the black and lime one only has 190,000 miles on a overhaul. The black one I called on and it was sold. The white one I don't know anything about it other than the pictures. I just got back from looking at the black and lime one. Looked like it has been taking real good care of. He still hauls with it everyday he pulls a 48 ft reefer. I don't know the year of the trailer, but he wanted 10,000 for the reefer I didn't get into the year and make of it to much cause I'm not really interested into it so much. The only prob I have with it is I haul containers and it is reallyt stretched out I couldn't get moved around to much with that being that far back from the fifth wheel and a extended hood.

Uh....yeah. I can see that stretched frame in a railyard or port. Not.

For cans? I think I would be looking for something shaped a little more like a Columbia so it can maneuver in those tight spots. Unless you're going OTR with cans, I think I would be looking for a day cab rather than somebody's old, used up show truck. You'll pay a way lower price and be able to move around those tight yards.

Are you buying bling, or are you buying a tool for your business?
