Trucking’s safer, self-driving future is around the corner

By the end of this decade, trucks powered by supercomputers will be hauling freight across the country on some of the safest roads in a century. Driver assistance technologies on commercial and passenger vehicles are more prevalent each year, creating the potential to reduce road crashes caused by human error. As artificial intelligence (AI) grows more powerful, there won’t be drivers operating some commercial vehicles running on major freight corridors.

The efficiency that could come with Class 8 autonomous vehicles (AVs) is nearly endless. But how safe can what equates to an 80,000-lb. robot be motoring among human-controlled vehicles on the interstate? That is a question that Ariel Wolf, general counsel for the Self-Driving Coalition, welcomes.

in short time (for some of us), this will not be an employment issue. i, to this day, am dead set against this technology, no matter the vehicles be cars, suv's, mini vans or large trucks.

i can see no good out of this, as time goes on, hackers will most certainly break into these systems and wreak havoc.


we have already seen countless crashes with those self driving cars, and no one involved in this bullshit see's it..???

This is my biggest concern with driverless technology. They can make these vehicles work, but I don't see them being able to do it securely.

Umm, yeah... When they can get a Tesla to drive safely and not kill pedestrians and plow into semi trailers, We can maybe begin the discussion of self driving trucks.

If they are talking about robots driving trucks? The future is now!
Many a steering wheel holder/seat warmer are robots and not very good ones.

here-in lies yet another issue..

the "attendant" that will be in that truck, what's his/her pay scale gonna be?

if that person is not actually driving, but only there as a safety back up, and to back up the rig to a loading dock, does that person deserve high pay, or close to what can be considered as minimum starting wages for newbies?

i cannot see any trucking company, laying out huge sums of cash for those rigs, then huge sums of cash, benefits, perks for the "attendants".....wouldn't that be counter-intuitive to the self driving, cost saving features???

Look at the airline industry. Pilots still making good money and the plane could easily get from point A to point B all by itself.

With minimum wage on the rise, and the ease of living off the government, trucking companies are gonna have to pay to keep drivers in trucks.

I checked Ariel Wolf's bio and was shocked to see that he has no actual experience driving a truck. Seems like he would be the authority on what the job encompasses, with his lack of first hand knowledge.

Welp look around nowadays what ya got is most Carriers "govern" the trucks..

Now there always those ones who can go a "whopping" say quarter a mile per hour faster than the guy infront of him

That guy will get in the Hammer Lane and ride sides for Miles

Cars will have high beams on and texting Iphone and ride the hammer lane 2 miles.

I dunno about you but back home along I-94 I don't hang alongside a truck

Infact knowing Truck Drivers know better than hang alongside one for miles.

Truckers that do that really piss me off

Should know better and how hard is it to click that throttle down a mph or 2.

My Philosophy is go and when ya far enough ahead I ain't riding your tail I'll reset my cruise to governor

Tesla already being "Sued" but some of the people are Dead or In Jail facing charges by admitting they were sleeping or one couple was having sex on a freeway.

Tesla might be legally "responsible" in how they Marketed their Driver Assist.
