Truckers Strike April 1, 2008

I was checking the load boards, and when the shutdown was on the rates went way up, now I see the rates have dropped below what they started at before the shutdown, this is brokers and companies just not willing to pay. I say no one pulls a load under 2.40 per mile minimum.
My husband hauls containers in Nashville, Tn. His company is still paying $1.OO PER MILE, that's right they are still trying to get these guys to haul freight for $1.00 PER MILE. Not all the loads are that cheap but close. They offered him a load Monday 174 miles for $173.00. Ofcourse he refused. He will sit home before he goes out and looses money.

a dollar a mile? That's insane, it cost more then that just to run the truck a mile.
Not only were they paying $1.00 per mile but they wanted him to bobtail 17 miles and pick it up and when he got back he would have to drop it at the yard he picked it up at and bobtail 17 miles back to their yard all for FREE! What nerve.

Are we going to stick together and stay sitting and win this time, or are we going to let them laugh at us again and continue to break our backs? I'm not hearing much at all on here one way or the other. It's almost like there is no longer any interest at all. I've been in the chat lounge several times today and there wasn't a soul there. It's like everyone has just given up. Like, "Oh Well, It's Fri. and Thank God It's Over" & let's all just go on back to work. I could almost sit down and cry to see this whole weeks' determination go down the drain. All for nothing. Just something to talk about next week as we haul cheap freight up and down the road, bitchin & cryin about going broke. Oh well, I tried. I think I did my part, it just wasn't enough too keep everyone fired up.

What I was aiming at was, lets say JB has 3000 drivers and they get 2300 to shutdown, they'll be fine. JB can't fire 2300 drivers. They hard up for drivers as it is let alone finding 2300 of them in a hurry. Once the smoke sets then JB can make their lives rough, but why do that? Most of those drivers hate them already. The only way this will work is if ALL freight drivers shut down. Not just a handful of owner op's. It just not big enough, George W probably has no idea that theres drivers shutdown. But the problem is the company drivers don't really care that it cost 1k to fill up. And there not home enough to really care that it takes $100 to fill there pickup. That tank will last 2 months.

Now if the whole country boycotts a single oil company for a few days. Then you'll see the prices come down, just not all the taxes on it. Besides the oil company's are the ones that should be attacked not consumers. And the gov't federal and state, just needs a nudging to cut some of the tax off. But the truth is that probably wouldn't work either. The oil that we stop buying will just be shipped to another country and their oil prices will drop. Not ours.

Are we going to stick together and stay sitting and win this time, or are we going to let them laugh at us again and continue to break our backs? I'm not hearing much at all on here one way or the other. It's almost like there is no longer any interest at all. I've been in the chat lounge several times today and there wasn't a soul there. regarding companies like JB Hunt.....sure many drivers who work for them don't like them, but why stay there and put up with the misery....because its a job first, earning a paycheck maybe even some additional mileage experience...NOW, you say JB (or anyone) cannot replace those drivers, at least not right away.....this is TRUE.....but also remember JB and others use the rails to move freight from one end of the country to another, and this being said, for the time being JB and the others can survive....then too, JB will have more operating capital from not paying drivers that are no longer on the payroll....

and yes, a company driver (myself included) doesn't care how much it costs to fuel the truck. i think we company drivers see that we have the responsibility to do our jobs as dutiful as possible, in these hard economic times......and let's never forget that wonderful service nearly ALL trucking companies use, and that is DAC/USIS.............you know, a company driver can be DAC'd for anything these days, so why add a shutdown or sick out or whatever to the file...?? you'll never erase that..

now, Bandit, yes, they will continue to laugh at you for going on this shutdown.....the oil companies do not need YOU, or ME.......if they do not get their sales of diesel here up to whatever level they want, guess what....they will ship the diesel overseas, like THEY ARE DOING NOW....what do you think the price of diesel will be when the demand starts up again....??

in reagrds to "seems like everyone is giving up"......yeah, you're right....this is the typical trucker's attitude............"i'll let someone else take my place" mentality................and NO ONE ELSE is going to step up.....

like you said, "all for nothing".........this shutdown DID NOT ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING..........it got on the news, for a FEW SECONDS......i saw more news on the price of groceries, the child abuse cases, the fires in the neighborhood, the car crashes, the local drug lord arrest...............

NO ONE CARES about the trucker or HIS problems..........

when John & Joan Q-Public are facing foreclosure, or they lose thier job because of out sourcing, or because of the economy.....truck drivers and the trucking industry DON'T MATTER..................

maybe some of you can weather this storm longer than others....but one poster here said the power company is going to shut off the power next week..........

care to guess what that driver does real soon.....???

i think, go back to work..........and suck it up.......sad......but i think it'll be true.....

here's the problem in a nut shell why this strike is failing. yes you may be parking your truck and sitting home but who knows your on strike. you need to gather in large groups, make signs, blow horns. that will attract the media's attention, when other drivers see this and they are so angy it will grow. but if all you are doing is sitting home then no one knows, thats why this thing is dying no one is seeing anyone else doing it so why should they shut down. We did that in tn. my husbands co. shut down and they sit home. i tried to get them to picket and i was told oh it won't do anygood. so their was no media coverage because no one made any noise.

I agree.

I HAVE STUDIED FOR DAYS ON WHY THIS THING WAS FAILING WHEN EVERY DRIVER WAS SO FED UP THEY WERE ABOUT TO BUST, THEY WERE READY, THEY WERE SCARED BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE THEY WERE READY. SO APRIL 1ST CAME AND SO MANY PEOPLE PARKED THEIR TRUCKS AND SIT HOME, IT WAS EVEN POSTED MANY TIMES ON THE WEB SITE SIT HOME AND TAKE A VACATION. THAT WILL NEVER WORK. IT TIME TO GO TO WORK. GET DRIVERS TOGETHER IN LARGE GROUPS AND HAVE SOMEONE CALL THE NEWS MEDIA AND LET THEM KNOW WHERE YOU WILL BE. OTHER DRIVERS SEE THIS AND THEY ARE ALREDAY FIRED UP AND READY TO MAKE A STAND BUT THEY DON'T SEE ANYONE ELSE DOING IT THEN THERE NOT GOING TO STEP UP.

SORRY GUYS, LIKE I SAID I HAVE STUDIED FOR DAYS ON THIS AND ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY. THIS IS ALSO WHERE ORGANZATION WOULD HAVE COME IN HANDY. EVERYONE SEEMS TO HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT IDEAS AND NO BODY REALLY KNEW WHAT TO DO. HOW BEST TO SHOW THE GOVERNMENT THAT WE'RE FED UP OTHER THAN TO BE SEEN. HOW TO MAKE THIS THING GROW IS ENVITE THE AMERICAN DRIVER THAT IS SUFFERING TO MAKE A STAND WITH US. THEY CAN MAKE SIGNS AND STAND WITH US. PEOPLE TALK ABOUT WRITING CONGRESS, BY GOSH WE DON'T HAVE TO WRITE THEM IF THEY SEE OUR ASSES PLASTERED ALL OVER THE MEDIA. THINK ABOUT IT.

PEOPLE DON'T LIKE TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THEMSELVES BUT THIS IS WHEN YOU HAVE TO OTHERWISE WHO WILL KNOW HOW STRONGLY YOU FEEL. I WENT TODAY AND BOUGHT SOME ONE OF THOSE MARKERS PEOPLE USE TO WRITE ON THEIR CAR WINDOWS AND I EXPRESSED MY FEELINGS "OIL CO'S DRIVING AMERICANS BROKE" AND ON ANOTHER WINDOW "TRUCKERS AND CITIZENS AGAINST HIGH FUEL PRICES". I ALSO PUT A SIGN IN MY YARD. I WANT EVERYONE I CAN TO KNOW HOW I FEEL. YOU MUST DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELVES IF YOU WANT TO BE HEARD, OTHERWISE WHO IS GOING TO HEAR YOU OTHER THAN THE PEOPLE WHO VISIT THIS WEB SITE.

You hit the nail right smack on the head Tn. Truckers' Wife. I believe you are as disappointed as I am over the lack of interest here. I am starting to think that you and I are the only ones left that are truly trying to keep this thing alive. I've been wondering what happened to Bullwinkle, gearjammer, FlatbedPete, & all the rest that were so fired up and posting here every day. All of a sudden they are silent. WHY? I have gone to the ports here in NC, I have gone to trk stops locally and talked to drivers at all of them trying to get everyone to keep up the fight. I have signs in all of my vehicles and am going to put one in my yard tomorrow. What the hell has happened to everyone else? Where have you all gone and WHY have you gone? Is that what it's come to? ARE WE JUST GONNA QUIT?

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE BEEN IN THIS BUSINESS ABOUT 15 YEARS AND WE HAVE ALOT OF TRUCKER FRIENDS AND I HAVE HEARD PEOPLE TALK ABOUT HOW THEY FELT ABOUT THE STRIKE AND EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE READY THEY WERE SCARED AND WE HAD TO DO SOME COXING. ANYWAY, TOMMORROW I'M GOING TO CALL THE DRIVER ON THE WEB SITE WWW. THE AMERICAN DRIVER.COM, WHO IS TRYING TO GET A REPRESENTATIVE FROM EVERY STATE SO WE CAN ORGANIZE AND DISCUSS MY IDEAS WITH. I KNOW THIS IS WHERE WE WENT WRONG. WE HAVE TO KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS EFFECTIVE. I THINK WE CAN REVIVE IT. NO ONE IS REALLY ON THE SAME PAGE ON WHAT TO DO YOU CAN TELL THAT BY EVERYONES OPINION.

I'M ON A ROLL. HEARD A POST TODAY ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT COULD NOW SET BACK AND LAUGH AT US BECAUSE WE GOT ALL THIS MEDIA ATTENTION AND NOTHING. WE BLEW IT. WE HAD NATIONAL ATTENTION AND THEN APRIL 1ST CAME AND WE GAVE THEM NOTHING TO REPORT ON. WE MISSED IT. I HEARD PEOPLE SAY ON THE SITE THAT THE MEDIA WASENT REPORTING ANYTHING ON THE STRIKE BUT WE WERENT GIVING THEM ANYTHING TO REPORT.

I agree! youre going to have to make lots of noise..

surely you didn't think this would be over in a day or two, it is going to take some time and people to use their heads, don't get discouraged that is the real enemy, I am reposting a message below that I posted earlier outlining hat we have accomplished and the direction this will naturally go, the war has started and we won the first battle in grand style, but something like this cannot be won in one day or with one battle .

I guess you didn't follow the news did you, the protest was successful in what it was suppose to do, gain media attention to the plight of the trucking business, which it did in spades, gain the attention of the Politicians that was needed to look into the abuses in this industry, and most importantly united the O/os into a group that can wield real power, think that all them small groups are now coming together and planning for a shutdown the is organized .
I do like that quote from one reporter that said that the shutdown was unorganized but it looks like it was organized enough.
It also had the benefit of getting the OOIDA to be a bit more aggressive and even woke the assholes from ATA up although admittedly they will never look out for the intrests of trucker.
the shutdown exceeded its intended expectations, I just listed a few of the accomplishments there are a lot more,

please don't get me wrong, i'm not saying at all that we are not or have not either one accomplished anything and i cant't say enough about how proud i am. All i'm saying is it could become so much bigger and right now all i'm seeing is it fizzling out and i don't want that to happen. IN my opion we just missed a great opportunity with the media to make this protest what we know it should and could be.
