Tracking Fuel Economy: 2021 Freightliner Cascadia

I bought this 2021 Freightliner Cascadia, with fuel economy definitely in mind. Not saying I will be running 50mph and looking for the lightest loads possible so I can boast about unrealistic numbers, but to cut fuel costs over where I was in my previous truck. That Previous truck was a 2015 Kenworth T660 (Glider) with a 12.7L Detroit (500 horsepower, 1650 torque). The previous truck had a lifetime average of 7.1mpg. Fuel economy was definitely not the only reason I went to the new truck, but I clearly expect to see better numbers.

The new truck is a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia. Specs are as follows:
  • 505 Horsepower
  • 1750 Torque
  • DT12 Overdrive
  • 2.85 Rear End Ratio
Like the previous truck, this truck is equipped with a ThermoKing Tripac APU and a bunk heater to minimize idling.

All of my fuel purchases are going to be documented via Fuel Gauges at letstruck.com. I will update this if I ever decide to use another tracking system, but I am very happy with what they offer. I will also be tracking DEF on the same site. If you are a member at letstruck, you can view either at any time via the following two links. First link is fuel mileage, Second link is DEF.
As of today, we are just over 3000 miles into this journey, and fuel economy is averaging 7.08mpg. The number would be better, but has been pulled down thanks to one really bad day and a tank average of 5.76.

DEF economy is starting off at 189.79, and to be totally honest, I'm not even sure where that number should be.

Since this is all starting off in the middle of winter, I am optimistic that the numbers will be much improved as the weather warms up. Time will tell. I also have quite a bit of APU time factoring into the numbers in the beginning because the truck was parked for about a week after the initial fill up as I got the inside set up, and also due to getting an initial APU coolant leak addressed which meant a couple of trips to ThermoKing and some additional time sitting and running the APU before and after the repairs.

I will add screenshots from letstruck occasionally since not everyone uses their service, as well as note any changes made to the truck to attempt to increase fuel economy.

As with the last truck, I will run a fuel additive. In the old truck, I ran Primrose. I am a big believer in their product, and I may go back to it at some point with this truck, but for now I will be using Hot Shots Secret in the 2021 Freightliner Cascadia. I did some short term testing with Hot Shots Secret with the previous truck, and was impressed with the results. I can't say it was better than Primrose, but the ordering process is much easier with Hot Shots Secret. That said, I won't get bogged down in fuel additive talk here, simply fuel economy.

I'm glad you posted this because I was going to ask.

7.08 in winter sounds pretty damned good. How heavy have you been?

Both loads have been in the 40's for load weight. This last one was "supposed" to be 37k, then I scaled out at over 75k Gross with 1/4 tank of fuel.

First load was wind and snow for most of the trip.

2nd load was heavy winds, 50mph+ gusts and climbing in elevation through Oklahoma and Texas. I actually averaged 5.3 per the computer for the day during that fun ride.

After that, it was a continued run out west into even higher elevation/grades into California on I40. Slower speeds in California should bring good results in the next fill up. I figure it will be in the 8's.

Yeah the miles you run offsets the payment in fuel mileage fairly easily.

I'm thinking FL pretty much has the emissions figured out so they're not really a nightmare anymore.

Hoped to get something lighter for my next trip, but ended up with dog food to Indiana, so looks like another 2100 miles of heavy stuff. We'll see how it looks once I get there.

I’d hope your DEF consumption improves. My old Western Star 4900 with a DD16 ran a pretty consistent 222 miles to the gallon of DEF. (Pen & paper). Fuel was at 5.6MPG. (85,000LBS loaded 100% of the time. SLC to Alberta).

I always look for 2.5-4% def vs what I purchase for fuel. Normally I’m seeing 3.2-3.3% def to fuel. My heavier loads tend to use more def and it makes sense since I have lower fuel economy.

When you gonna come up north and test those fancy tank heaters?

Not in the negatives, but I am in Indiana tonight. Temp was going to be 6, now it has dropped the low to 4. Won't be surprised to have it actually hit zero as the number keeps being revised down.

No winter additive put into the tanks, and truck will not idle all night. hasn't idled since about 0700 this morning, and won't be started until mid morning tomorrow.

The way your apu ran last night. You likely won’t have to run.

Now you’ve got me looking at install ports.

Think you could post pictures of where your apu coolant hoses tie into the block?

I don't remember if you said, are the heaters the standpipe type that drops in the sending unit hole, or the old school tubing loops?

Sending unit. Pretty sure this is the exact unit.

A couple more screenshots. Just now got around to updating Fuelgauges as I was entering my IFTA info.

So far is has been nothing but Arkansas to the west coast. A trip to Arizona, the rest into the Sacramento area, and one of those continued up into Washington then back across Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, etc....

The weather has sucked, particularly the wind.

I keep telling Myself that I am going to stop coming out this way for a while and focus on the Midwest. But, here I am again in California
