Yeah let's just put toll booths on every street corner.
Private roads means an entity profits from them. Meaning they charge a toll higher than it would cost to maintain them. Billionaires get rich at our expense.
Public roads means, in theory anyway, that the entity that maintains them only taxes what it costs to break even after maintenance.
So in theory, we're better off with public roads than toll roads.
And I say "in theory" because the government entity is corrupt and inefficient,resulting in high taxes and funding shortages due to outright theft of public funds.
The only practical solution for highway funding is a serious (for real) reform of how the current taxes are spent, followed by general population prison terms for every politician and bureaucrat who's ever stolen from the cookie jar.
Without the theft and misuse of funds, once they get caught up replacing bridges, they could actually lower the taxes.
The very first thing those Australian billionaires did when they leased the Indiana turnpike was raise the tolls. F*** privately owned toll roads.
