Old acid hauler but not too caustic
In the mid 1970s I took a couple of classes at the Institute of Labor Relations at Cal. One of the classes was taught by Barry Silverman, then the economist for the ILWU. Barry was a super bright and interesting guy. In those days, the ILWU claim to fame was that Harry Bridges, then the ILUW president, didn't take more than a top longshoreman. I have no proof of that but suspect that if there were a large disparity between what Harry got and what an A list longshoreman got, Erich Hoffer, even then a known longshoreman/philosopher (my favorite) would have spilled the beans. Eric was a strong union guy but an equally strong egalitarian. Recall that Harry Bridges was always regarded as a commie. But his members respected him as did the attorneys e.g. Sam Kagel, for the ship owners and associates.
So with the Harry Bridges' assumption, I tried to check on what the top teamsters in Alaska were making. The last thing I could find was a vintage 2014 report. Most of the Teamster honchos were making around $100K then. So I'm not too sure that my assumption is worth a damn.
So I went to the DOL website and worked through some of its obscurities. Then I emailed the department in hopes of getting some info. Eventually I might have some information about what Teamster truckers earn by the hour and mile. I'm not expecting too much. DOL is probably in bed with the IBT and the big carriers as the revolving door is likely alive and well in that industry like most others.
My non-spousal unit friend and I drove 1800 miles through Nevada and CA from 3/23 through 3/30. And on 3/31, I got lost, as usual in Las Vegas -- I dodged a guy coming at me in my lane. But before that, the truckers on 101, 41, 46, and 1 were a pretty good lot. Only one guy was blocking the lanes; I guess he thought he was a big strapper and could blast around two trucks running parallel to him -- they had their own race going.
Got to go both up and down what I regarded as "my" hill, Cuesta grade. No need me to thank me for getting the speed limit changed from 25 to 35 mph for the southbound lanes -- beating the system was reward enough. For all you jailhouse lawyers, remember if the state changes the roadway, it has to do a new speed-setting survey. Even via informal discovery, I found that the state didn't do a new survey when it widened the road. So contested the ticket. The judge in Solvang dismissed the case when I went in with blueprints and that state traffic manual.
If guys are in Vegaas and need dental work, go to Smile Haven there (roughly Eastern and Flamingo). I've been a patient there for at least 6 years and 3 of my attorney friends from here in Anchorage are patients there. For about $950, I got a filling, cleaning, and crown.
If you have a chance to stay at the MGM Grand, don't, it's a PITA. You have to traipse around west hell to get to the front desk. But my little birthday buddy thought that a birthday dinner at Emeril's restaurant would be cool (the drinks were more spendy than the food). Guess I missed getting pic of her at Emeril's. This was taken at the Madonna Inn, the ultimate chick hotel (in San Luis Obispo).
It may be cool here in Anchorage but I'm happy to be back.
