Speaking to the topic. We ( the company I work for) will no longer be serving a customer in Maine. They are slow to pay, First to bitch. More importantly it was a break even or at a loss to service this customer, A bitch to find a back haul. Both parties decided to cut ties.
Yes every customer is valuable and can lead to more business but there is a breaking point!

We do a lot of work that can be break even just to keep runs that are lucrative from the same customer.

Was it water, mulch or lumber? I got called back to my old job a few years ago for a year. During that time I still kept my authority. I would dead head up to Maine and bring back lumber or mulch to my home town just to keep my truck happy. I made nothing at all except made a ton of people happy who wanted to do the trip with me in a big rig. One thing I found out. In my home town it's against the law to unload a truck on Sunday!
