So, I know why you don't like brokers, but...

You drivers are making it so easy for me to look good and to get repeat business.

For $20 less than you someone else would probably hauling the same loads you are. Brokers could usually care less about how nice you are. Now the smaller brokers are a little different than the big ones, but the bigger ones usually pay people to do nothing but make pointless phone calls to drivers.

Like I've told many brokers... You get what you paid for! You want it hauled cheap don't expect much...lol

Sure, that is the theory, but it never seems to work out that way for me. I have brokers paying decent rates calling me over and over again. Why? Because I treat them like they treat me, like I want their business.

If a broker lowballs me, if it isn't even in the ball park, I politely say thank you for your time and hang up. If I think I can get a little more, I'll give my price and justification, they can say yes or no, I am still polite. Why burn bridges. They may have negotiated a low rate with the shipper and they are doing their best to cover the load. That is not to say their next load won't be a good paying load and they will remember rudeness and they will remember courtesy.

Oh don't get me wrong I do believe you treating them decent will help. I'm certainly not going to be rude unless they are that way with me. But lowball me and I get offended so then the game changes! I'm not nice or rude I'm just straight to the point.

Occasionally when I get out east, the company books me a brokered load.

100% of the brokered loads I've hauled, don't pay worth a crap.

We had a decent account out of northern Virginia once. CH Robinson went in there & low-balled 'em & we lost the contract. Then CH Robinson had the balls to offer us the same loads for not much more than HALF what we used to haul it for.

And the brokers get my number because dispatch fuggin' gives it to them when they book the load. And for the past several years, the brokers won't give out the shipper's pickup number to anybody but the driver. Dispatch just gives me the broker's load number, which means nothing to the shipper. So I have to call them to get the pickup number.

Then they want me to call them periodically to update them on where I'm at & my ETA. Most of them don't call me constantly any more, but that's probably because I refuse to haul for CH Robinson. Them futhermuckers called me every 30 minutes one time, when I was empty, en route to the shipper. It was some crap out of Ghetto, NJ that went to a Target crap-hole in Winchester, VA that had probably sat on a load board until the last minute because nobody wanted to haul it for that bottom-dollar rate. That was the last straw for CH Robinson. Every time dispatch gives me a brokered load, when I call them, if they answer the phone & say "CH Robinson..." I say "sorry I have the wrong number" and call dispatch & remind them I don't haul for CH Robinson & then I usually end up arguing with dispatch til he gives up & transfers the call to the head of operations & then I have to argue with him too.
