I was working the dock this evening, noticed what appeared to be a camera in a Schneider trailer.Does anyone know if that is what I seen?(I think so).If so how do they work,I know how cameras work,do they record all the time?Do they have a separate power supply?any memory?etc. etc...Hope who ever looks at the tape has a sense of humor!lol.
Anyway I figured this would be the best place to find my answer, sarcastic and or truthful

yes. I can't remember exactly what these things did, but you will find cameras/recorders inside of some trailers. The ones I dealt with were taped to the wall by the shipper. Only seen these a couple times though, but it has been quite a while since I have pulled a box around.

Tracking device..I believe that. But,the unit is on the front wall, upper left corner, black and has a lens in it.That is what made me think that it is a security camera. It would actually make sense for companies to install them in the trailers. To help with freight claims, loading and unloading problems, and also trailer damage (covering of the drivers a$$ so to speak).

I would not doubt there being cameras in trailers. If a trailer is vandalized they can see exactly who did it. I know of a trailer that was set on fire once, it would have been nice to see who did it.
My hubby and I would have looked pretty funny on camera taping the spaces inside the trailer with duct tape in order to load cotton.

That's where Schneider puts their trackers on the trailers. When we hauled them if we saw they didn't have a GPS locater on the trailer we had to take them to the shop.

The function of the camera is not a camera as you know it. All it does is senses whether the trailer is loaded or not.

They spent millions on that "Trailer Tracs" system only to find it didn't work worth a crap. The GPS part works but the camera/sensor is useless!

Agree with you patriciajnsn...17 years in this industry..and these companies pay drivers squat...think i could make just as much working at walmart nowadays...it is the reason i hope to call it quits in the trucking industry in dec 2009...i have had enough of busting my behind and getting pay that is barely above the poverty level.

Some of my reefer customers place devises in the product, to make sure carrier is using correct temp.

I've heard something about that, it is like a strip and if it gets above a certain temp it changes color, never seen one, heard a driver talking about it

I get the "temp tale" from customers now and then. It's just an electronic thing. They put it in a case of product somewhere on the trailer and then plug it in to the computer when you unload and read a graph of the temps from the trip when your done. Just to see if product is being hauled correctly!

I've been installed the cameras (totally 5 pcs - 2 inside the reefer) on my trucks when broker didn't pay for damaged freight as by the contract always the driver responsible for the load.
Once was catched a truck hit the fender and video proof was provided to my insurance.
So now cameras recording 24/7.
There is a little problem - when truck is off 3-4 days battery gets low in full.

I am looking to get a 6-channel DVR system for my truck.

Forward, mirror each side, rear of trailer, forward looking trailer inside and inside front looking back.

We have SkyBitz cameras and GPS on all of the trailers at my carrier. Kinda neat in some ways. If a trailer has a seal on it, doesn't mean it is loaded. Some drop and hook customers will seal up a trailer to keep one of us from grabbing it as an empty. Carrier can do a quick look via the Skybitz and see if the trailer is loaded or not.

Do you have those conversations. ....

"That's a loaded trailer"

"There is nothing in it and my company said to take it as an empty"

"Well it is not their trailer to release"

"Really you fuck heads bought it from Tommy? Did you fucking tell him because he thinks he still has the goddamn title!"

*Actual conversation at the Ypsilanti GM parts warehouse. No not me a driver in front of me that needed the empty to go get his back haul and go home.

Although when the guard bitches I told them that he was nice and polite while he explained the ownership of the trailer;) I always hated that guard anyways:p

I had the same conversation with security at a Target warehouse in Virginia once.
