As an electronics person, all I can say is...
Don't buy the newer stuff (unless it's zero-emission), because it is HORRIBLE (and honestly, don't even get me started on the ECU code)!
In fact, it's gotten so bad that I'm thinking of doing what I call an "elec-to-mechanical" (a pun on electromechanical) conversion, in which I will basically rip out all the electronics in the powertrain and replace them with their mechanical equivalents. Frankly, I just can't see any other way to do it.
Then I get to use all those salvaged electronics for my own projects (*insert victory dance here*) and I don't have to deal with any more electronic-related breakdowns!
OK, OK, it might sound crazy, but I would much rather own a vehicle I can repair than one that I can't even begin to understand, even having been in electronics for many years now.
