There are several states that still use them. The thing is, it has to be marked as a civil penalty and not a criminal charge. So it’s sketchy as to wether it would actually knock points from your license. In Iowa it does not.

It is written as a civil violation, not a criminal. Different level of standard for conviction.

Iowa gets around the speed limit law using cameras by declaring them a civil violation, not a criminal complaint.

It's gone all the way to the state supreme Court and survived.

At the time, Qualcomm even declared that their system is inaccurate enough that you cannot use their system to fight speeding tickets too

Iowa.

I get a speeding ticket in a construction zone in Sioux City.

I swore I was doing 55-57.

Company got mailed a summons and forwarded it to me.

I had dispatch pull the Qualcomm history for defense.

It proved that the system was actually malfunctioning.

By the time all was said and done, it turned out the camera had been malfunctioning for over 6 weeks. It was issuing over 80% tickets for all the traffic going past at the time. Normal is like 30-40.

I told time I'd see them in court. Called a local newspaper and gave them copies of everything.

Fighting it both in court and the media.

Learned Iowa had several cases taking it to their supreme court. Every time it was upheld as legal due to it being a civil violation.


News outlet was threatened with a lawsuit by omnitracs if they used anything related to the aobr I had given in the story.

So they killed the story completely

Not positive, but I think this may have happened somewhere at the state level.

It was taken to court in Denver CO back in the 80's. Forced the Denver Cops to set up a sign 2 blocks before the Robocop mobile, and requires that a cop be physically present operating it. I'm not sure if it went state-wide.

Back when they first started this cameras garbage there was a guy in Florida that got a ticket in the mail with a picture of him in his car running a red light.

He mailed them back a picture of a check for the amount of the fine.

I remember they had construction zone cameras in Effingham when they were doing the roadwork there. Most of the cameras didn't work.
They are probably still there and so is the construction in Effingham, IL.
