Pennsylvania to begin giving tickets in construction zones via cameras March 4th, 2020

In just a few more weeks, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin using a camera system to enforce speed limits in construction zones.

Starting on March 4, 2020,PennDOT’s Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program will go into full effect, meaning drivers caught speeding in a work zone by the camera systems can be ticketed.

My guess would be never.

I'm torn on this, as it opens up a box that likely cannot be closed.

Tailgating and speeding in construction zones are two things that annoy me, and I definitely want to see action taken to go after people who do this.

Doing this via cameras can lead to far more law enforcement surveillance, which might not be a good thing.

Would be great if it slowed people down and stopped the tailgating.
They need to shorten the construction areas where no one is working. In 20 miles, they are only working in 2 miles, leaving people frustrated having to do the construction speed where it's not necessary.

My home state has speed cameras and red light cameras. Lots of other states do too. I don’t blame them for wanting to better enforce speed in construction but it’s definitely a double egde sword.

Most of the EU has traffic cams everywhere. They time vehicles from point to point and mail the registrant a ticket for said violation. No court, no lawyers. Pay the fine, your plate was tagged.

Most of those spots have cattle chutes so narrow you don't really wanna go any faster anyways. It's hard to handle, especially if the temporary lane(s) is/are half assed.

we have school speed zone cameras. school zone speed limit is 20 mph, but they "give you" 11 mph over here as well.

i say "what's the use, of giving x amount over"? isn't that still speeding above the posted limits?

if it is posted at (maybe 35 mph in a work zone), make that the speed camera's point of flashing the camera on you. done deal.

Maybe they should spend the money on a literacy program. I was on I 81 that said trucks use left lane only.
Some fucking Keystone 4-wheeler gives me the finger and points to me to get in the right lane.

It says so right in the articles. Where they're located and what the tolerance is.

They did the same for the ones in the WV/MD bridge zone on 81. Article saying hey here's where they're gonna be and here's the limit. I think it's the same, maybe 12 over.

Yet people go blasting through there all the time. Selfish assholes.

Iowa gets around the speed limit law using cameras by declaring them a civil violation, not a criminal complaint.

It's gone all the way to the state supreme Court and survived.

At the time, Qualcomm even declared that their system is inaccurate enough that you cannot use their system to fight speeding tickets too
