OOIDA: It’s time for truck weight exemptions to expire

Weight exemptions that were granted because of the COVID-19 pandemic should expire as soon as possible, OOIDA said in a letter to leaders of the Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration.

“At the outset of the COVID-19 emergency, it was prudent for states to increase truck weight limits to allow for the quick transportation of emergency supplies,” wrote OOIDA President Todd Spencer. “These waivers helped drivers make critical deliveries in a timely manner. However, now that emergency and panic buying has slowed and most other economic activity has ground to a halt, there is no longer a need for these exemptions.”

I'd still like to know why Kraft Inc got away with overweight intrastate loads between their distribution facilities. As I see it, it just made their unusually cheep pandemic freight even cheaper.

Simple. States allowed weight exemptions, KraftHeinz took advantage of it.

That said, their rates dropped as the weight increased, and I never touched any of it at the crap rates.

Increased weights are fine, as long as increased rates come with it.

This shipper knows how to move their loads cheap, though.

The state exemption specified shipments dealing with the pandemic emergency...

Kids staying at home and college and university not going to school, restaurants closed for those challenged by their lack of cooking skills, Kraft dinner was the only way to keep these people alive.

Not DC to DC transfers...

DC to DC transfers can easily be part of the effort to get things where they need to go.

Why so butthurt about Kraft? Everyone else is doing the same thing.

Even International Paper is moving rolls of paper from plant to plant and we get to haul them under the HOS exemption because the paper will be used eventually for packaging food.

No different with Kraft. Gotta get it from one DC to another DC in order to be able to distribute it.

They outta fix Tandems "Dead" Center no more sliding just adjust the per axle weights by 15/20 percent ...

Also the steers do like "Western" States give 20k on the Steers..

Why can't the FMCSA make "Rational" Rules "NATIONWIDE"..

We don't need 50 separate "Fifedoms"..

And it's "Constitutionally" VALID under the Commerce Clause..

Time to make one set of Rules "Nationwide"
