I was just listening to news nation and they re reporting that the government wants to lower the age to get a CDL to 16,
just what in the hell are these idiots thinking?
I am of the opinion that 21 should be the minimum age and even then it is iffy if people have gained enough common sense to drive 80,000 lbs around and now some rocket scientist thinks its a good idea to let children drive, these kids are not even out of high school yet!!

I agree with you completely!
The government might think it is a good idea for 16 yro to have a CDL. Insurance companies may think otherwise.
When I was starting out many insurance companies wanted 25 year old minimum.

For farm kids yes.

Farm kids grew up driving tractors and pulling plows and spreaders so have an idea about working with heavy equipment.

Then again I don't believe farmers actually need a CDL to run a grain truck as long as it's Farm Registration and Plated and on Farm Buissness such as hauling grain or hay.

That said they ain't gonna be out on the big road for awhile.

that is not what they said, they were talking about the trucking shortage and the ways the government was looking into alleviating the driver shortage.
And as far as kids driving for the farmers, I was 12 when I was driving a 14 ft flatbed truck in the fields, and 15 when I started hauling grain down the road to the elevator, about a five mile round trip things were a lot different back then, the local sheriff even knew what was going on and as long as I wasn't stupid there wasn't a problem they knew that the crops had to get in.
I was brought up around machinery and taught to respect the capabilities and dangers at a very young age.
but do you really want to see some city kid driving around in something that is dangerous and probably never even sat in until their first day of class?

CDL = Commercial Drivers License. 16 year olds in the two states I mentioned can haul intrastate freight.

I welcome it. I would rather see kids graduating high school and doing what they want to do rather than having them go start a career somewhere else doing something they don’t want to do.

I'm wondering if it's better to teach them the physics of a semi truck before they get 20 years of driving sedans and SUVs behind them first thinking there's no difference until it's too late.

Trucking is a second career for many if not most because of what you said...having to make a living some other way before they're old enough.

It might also turn more people into better drivers when they're in their personal vehicles.

i didn't like (and still do not like) lowering the age to 18.......let alone now this BS of 16..???

i'd prefer 23 to 25 at the very least.

Do you bitch about foreigners taking jobs?

If so this is why. Kids who actually want to choose it early on can't because everyone wants them to wait until it's too late. They need to make a living in the meantime, and they're not likely to uproot themselves once they have something good with a pension and a family and a mortgage just to get into trucking.
