That's just an Urban Legend. See: Father of DOS.
The Seattle Computer Products owner, Rod Brock, was the one who sold it to Microsoft for $25,000 (which they later bumped up another $50,000). He later tried to market his own version of the operating system, called Seattle DOS, but (of course) Microsoft sued and he lost his shirt in litigation.
In an interview I saw some time (2004, if I recall) back, he commented about "...if I knew then what I know now...".
My bad. I guess you can't believe everything you read on the internet.
