Depending on routing and time frame you may want to consider the Ludington Ferry. It is less susceptible to wind shutdowns.
I'm sure the fees have only gone up since that picture so maybe call the bridge ahead.
Also...if you're going to pull OD in the U.P. MAKE DAMN SURE you obey whatever ridiculous speed limit is listed in the provisions section of your permit. They're serious about that statewide, but more in the U.P. since it's a frigging police state up there.

What's great about the grated deck is that even in great wind it holds the vehicles on. Mostly. People who drive Smart Cars just aren't that great at being smart and will be greatly surprised when they get blown off and fall the great distance into the Mackinac Strait despite the grate.
