We’ve talked many times in these columns about the necessity of good nutrition and exercise for a healthy heart. Eating the proper foods and walking for 30 minutes daily can go a long way in controlling blood pressure and lipid levels in the blood. We’ve all heard it, we all talk about it but not all of us take the time to think about what we are going to eat or when or where we are going to exercise.

Consequently there are a lot of truckers with diseased hearts or poor circulation caused by weak hearts that try to pump blood through arteries that are slowly clogging up with the fats in their blood.

I have jogged around truck stops while being watched like I was a nut, done push ups under the trailer, and had my bicycle with me during my short career as a driver. On nice sunny days, and if on line 1, I was on the bike and GONE. My TV times were for lousy weather when I was on my own time. Some drivers do some of what I did, but not enough. And it's easy to fall out of shape after just a short while. The human body was meant to move, and move a lot more than from the bunk to the showers, around the truck for pre-trip, and to the driver seat.

There is no way that I would ever do push ups under a trailer. There is so much nasty crap on the ground with drivers peeing by their trailers. The bicycle is a great idea. Some guys carry dumbell weights in their trucks in order to do reps.

I do a lot of 8 ounce curls... and, run back and forth to the restroom.

Think that's doin' it for me?

I walked all the way across the road and back carrying 36 cans of beer tonight. Although, I will admit I parked close to the truck stop instead of my usual position waaaaaaay out back. I guess I'm still lazy after all.

Forgot to mention that I always did that with something between me and the asphalt. I was not quite that crazy. Yes, I loved having the bicycle with me. Got me away from the job and the truck.
