You said it's a 2005.

Since it predates DPF, is it possible the previous owner was disposing his used oil in the fuel tank?

They used to do it at Roadway so they wouldn't have to pay to have it hauled off.

But I've heard of guys with older trucks putting small amounts of their used oil in their fuel to add lubricity to the ULSD.

How are you going to service injector cups inside the truck?

Unless he meant that they are serviceable while the engine is in the frame, then he should have stated as such.

Irontite makes tools for replacing ISX DOHC injector cups. Everything you need will run over $2000 but it can be done inframe. Had mine done at the only machine shop in Alabama that does it when I overhauled the engine. As for black colored fuel that can be carbon from loose injector settings. If the plunger doesn't seat well when the cylinder fires compression will come back up the tip into the fuel system. Of course a bad injector can cause it too. Be extra careful with the top injector o-ring they can cut easily during install and will let fuel contaminate the oil. Truck sitting in my shop right now came in with 20 psi oil pressure at road speed. At least 5 gallons of fuel in oil.
