I'm fat, you're fat... (Dieting)

I do not count calories and I do not count carbs. I'm not obsessive about food. I eat when I'm hungry and I stop eating when I'm not hungry anymore. I don't eat until I'm stuffed. I'm no longer hungry when my mouth stops watering and that's when I put my fork down. I eat what I'm hungry for rather than just what's available. If that means I'm eating cold canned roast beef and a can of green beans, well, it's not exactly what I wanted, but it's better than the two-fer hotdogs at Pilot, and I won't feel tired and still hungry afterward.

Here's where I deviate most significantly from DrDaliah's program:

Unlike common belief, the feeling of being hungry is not bad for you. It tells you it's time to eat. I think that part of the reason people are so fat is they don't allow themselves to become hungry. They eat because it's time to eat, not because they need food. I also do not believe it's good for humans to go to bed hungry. A light carb snack before bed absorbs stomach acid and helps me fall asleep faster.

All of the meddling and tinkering with people's diets (six servings of grains...three servings of dairy...four servings of fruit...cut out red meat....eat fish...) and biological schedules (it's TIME to eat...it's TIME to go to bed...it's TIME to get up...) has created widespread obesity and now, everybody's bitching about it and trying to correct it with more of what caused it in the first place.

The so-called "Balanced Diet Pyramid" is the invention of government controlled farm interests. It has nothing to do with reality.

agree with everything above. Cut calories, burn calories, cut carbs, more veggies, more fruit, increase muscle, etc. Weight watchers works the best and is the cheapest of all the diet plans but it works better if you can go with the classes and have the women cheer you on. Tough to get my guys to go.......

Here however are some practical quick tricks......

1. Drink a full glass of water 10 minutes before you eat
2. Cut meals in 1/2 and eat at 6 am, 10 am, 2 pm and 6 pm, rather than breakfast, lunch and dinner
3. Cut Chinese food.....the sodium and carbs seem to pack on more weight than Italian and Mexican if you can believe it.
4. No fried food....ever
5. Eat breakfast for dinner and dinner for breakfast - this amazingly works. Breakfast cereal (small bowl) with some fruit for dinner - while having your chicken/fish/steak in the am seems to psych out your metabolism and it works.
6. While driving, think of ways to exercise to up muscle fibers.....suck in stomach, flex biceps, butt flexes....yes even men can Kegel......

Just my humble opinion as I chomp on some left over chocolate cake......

The meal times are really tough for us sometimes out on the road because our schedules are really jacked up.

I try to eat small portions, and my wife also tells me to not eat late. That eating late part works if you can get to bed at a normal time, but normal usually doesn't exist out here and I cannot go to sleep hungry. We have days that may start with breakfast at 6am, but the day may not end til 2am.

LOL!!! Dr. Daliah doesn't have a program.....wish I did. Maybe I can make a book. Those are just some quick tricks in addition to all your stellar ideas. Just wanted to play in the sandbox with y'all.......

What happens if you eat a whole pineapple right before going to bed?

I mean besides the raging heartburn??

I do read labels. My concern is sodium and sugars. Calories are not really an issue. Way too much salt in our food these days and sugar too. I only eat once a day before bed, ( I know it's bad to eat before sleep) That's when I get hungry. I do drink water before during and after eating. But, like i said i could stand to lose 30 lbs.

It's worse to eat only once per day.

Food usually goes into the stomach and sits for a couple hours, then it goes to the small intestine and starts digesting and absorbing most of the calories (slight caloric absorption in the mouth with sugar). It could take a day or so travelling through till it gets to colon. In the colon water is reabsorbed from the stool. That's why when one has diarrhea and fast transit time its all wet, but when one is constipated the stool is hard and dry from the days of churning.

One could argue that resting after eating allows better digestion. However, your body is designed not to have big meals....ever. Since we were infants we were designed to take in food every couple hours. We would hunt, but daily graze on gatherings.

Our pancreas works better that way....shooting out the insulin more consistently. One reason why diabetics say they were hypoglycemic for years before the diabetes is because they would eat one large meal a day and the pancreas would try to shoot out enough insulin for just one meal and screw itself up the rest of the day. So we see sugar drops and then finally we turn middle aged (or other things happen to our pancreas such as a viral illness) and we can't control our sugar, becoming a diabetic.

Our bodies like moderation and easy meal boluses. It yells at us if we do things wrong. Some refer to these tongue lashings as a "fart".......

Are you saying eating once a day can lead to diabetes? Diabetes is one of my biggest fears, It will cost me the job I love. If so then I have to change my ways.

Is it? I have heard that. I heard you are better off to eat small meals through out the day, not breakfast, lunch and dinner. , but like 4 to 6 small meals a day.
yeah but Im too lazy to cook when Im at home so i just make one bigass meal, usually spaghetti if I'm drunk cuz it absorbs the alcohol & i don't wake up with a hangover

Yes it can. Scares me too since I only have time for one meal as well but make sure to eat little bits throughout the day.
Thank you! I am going to have to force my self to eat something a few times during the day. I am sure it will be hard at first but we as people adapt quickly.

Exactly Duck. That's why I'm liking this Paleo thing. Look on the website it even says you can go way off the reservation a few times!

Isn't that the stuff that the natives eat so they can go on a 3-day vision quest & become attuned to the spirit world?

Ok, I'm in. I bought a Thigh Master off Ebay and had it Fedex'd overnight to Iowa80 and I'm doing the low carb thingie so I started the 2 week insurrection step today.
