How Do Radial Aircraft Engines Work?

Like I said, the mazda version is loosely based on the Indy Car version. The thing is claiming to have about 170 horsepower and fuel efficient. These new engines can also run on alcohol and produce more torque, because the cases are built to withstand more heat.

I would like to have a mazda with one of those rotary engines. They rev like hell, but don't last as long as conventional engines do, they wear out the "apex" points on the rotor, not much torque though. Anyone ever hear of the Ford Semi truck, from the 60's with a turbine engine in it? I'm a sucker for this kind of history and ****.

I found some more pics of it some time ago I can't find again, the cab of that thing was pretty friggin' cool, even compared to today's stuff.

The visibility on that thing is awesome! It would suck to have to replace that windshield though. Nowadays we drive the Freightliner classic, which is like looking across a football field in front or you.

I have a book somewhere called "50 years of General Motors".

There was a page or two about GM's version of the gas turbine powered trucks from that era. They made a few of them but they never went into production. They just used them to haul car parts back and forth between Detroit, Toledo & Youngstown. I think it said they were unreliable, bad on fuel, .. something like that.

WTF?? Where'd his engine go?

Cabovers were ahead of their time?

No. The interior of the GMC Astro and Chevrolet Titan was. First true wraparound dash with all the controls at arms reach without moving your body. They were a vary well built truck other than the over sized windshield and door glass. Pain in the ass to heat and cool.

I've never driven one, but having that short wheel base would be a plus.

I drove one about 300 yards once when I was a teenager working in a crane shop. I had to pull it into the shop to put a crane on it. I don't think I got it out of 3rd gear.

I typed "GMC Astro interior" into Google Images. I got about a billion pictures of ****ing mini-vans.

But I found this:

And for "Chevrolet Titan interior" I found this:

I'm not even going to ask what the hell that thing is.

You must have never driven a Tandem dump truck either. And it can't be any worse than a single axle

I rode shotgun in a Mack 3 axle straight truck once, from Bolingbrook, IL up to Beloit, WI. I was a teenager, working at a crane shop. I'd put a crane on a truck owned by some company called ABC and one of the other mechanics, who had a CDL, was driving it up there to swap it out for another one. A roofing company had bought several new trucks & was having us put knuckle-boom cranes on them. I went with because the boss had bought a Ford Taurus SHO for the salesman that I was supposed to drive back. The ride up there in that truck was miserable. The drivers seat was air, but the passenger seat wasn't. I couldn't understand why the damn thing would bounce around & shake even on perfectly smooth, brand new pavement. It felt like the tires were half-full of concrete or something & as they were turning, they were off balance by about 200 lbs each. I mean that piece of **** literally felt like we were hitting curbs every quarter second. The guy who was driving told me that all trucks ride like that. I said bull**** there's gotta be something wrong with it. On one of the 8 or 9 times I made him pull over so I could make yellow snow, I went over that truck looking for something falling off. I checked the crane mounting bolts, which I'd installed myself, I checked the bolts for the flatbed which I'd removed, cut 6 feet off of, and re-mounted. I checked the leaf springs & hangers & everything. The drive shafts weren't bent. I couldn't find anything wrong with that truck. I guess it was just a piece of ****.
