I've been thinking of getting a trucker GPS device to help with getting to where I'm going before I get out on the road. Do any of you have any that you like in particular or is this a waste of money?

i consider them just another toy for the driver. none of them are completely accurate. i have read around about drivers who use them and they have so many issues with them. a good up to date map book is still your best bet. something new out that looks decent but i know nobody who has used it or how well it works.

I got the nuvi200 and I really like it.

I don't depend on it for directions, as I would still get them from the shipper/receiver, but once you have them, it is a great thing to have to keep from missing a turn due to it being too dark to read a street sign, or the street sign missing.

Also great for quickly giving you an route to look at and know with the click of a button how far you have traveled and how far you have left.

I have the cobra 4000 I like the big screen but the damn software hasn't been upgraded for 2 years and I got tired of waiting for it so i just won a brand new nuvi 680 on e-bay i can't wait to get it in the truck. BTW I will have the cobra up for sale when I get the nuvi, there ain't anything wrong with it other than the maps are getting out of date.

I have a Magellan and looking back on it I should have gotten a garmin. The garmins actually have a truck route option. While it may not protect you from overheight situations it will still keep you on the right path.

Mine doesn't have truck routes, or if it does, I can't find it. It has short route, fast route, and off-road. I bought the Garmin Nuvi200 after much internet research, and hearing that all the Garmins had truck routes.

Garmin® mapping software does not contain truck routes or low clearances. You can put your unit in Truck Mode, which means that the unit navigates on major roads as much as possible. However, if there is only one way to get to your destination and you need to go down a street on which trucks are not allowed, the unit will plan to navigate that road.
To put your device in Truck Mode:

1. Touch the Tools icon.
2. Touch Navigation.
3. Select Vehicle
4. Select Truck and then touch OK.
5. Touch Back until you return to the Main Menu.

Well, this is why you definitely want to research a product before buying it, LOL. Now that I searched deeper into Garmin, I found this:

Garmin® Mapping Software does not contain truck routes or low bridge clearance information. You can put your unit in truck mode(with exception of nüvi® 2XX, nüvi 7XX, and nüvi 8XX) which means that the unit navigates on major roads as much as possible. However, if there is only one way to get to your destination and you need to go down a street where trucks are not allowed, the unit will plan to navigate that road.

Had I seen this, I never would have bought the nuvi200, because it doesn't have the truck mode. Luckily, I don't need the truck mode anyway now.
