Getting Back After 4 Years

Would like to get back on the road driving teams. I live in Florida. 61 years old. Do I have a prayer?

what's next, make a demeaning remark about janitors, waitresses, bell hops, and cotton candy machine operators..??
Yes.

It's just part of American culture to see low paying, unskilled jobs as demeaning. It encourages people to aim higher. Like when your parents or teachers probably told you to study and get good grades or you'll be pumping gas for a living.

Get over it and stop whining. 🙄

i did pump gas and fix cars for a living, did quite well at it too, till i got into trucking

now, no more gas jockeys all self serve, except (i think) still in NJ, no self serve there.

well, you certainly did not specify "demeaning" to yourself.

a job is a job, that either pays the bills, or offers one some time to keep on working, for say "beer money", or "mad money"....

driving a parts truck pays differently in all parts of this country.

you still just go on insulting a segment of people.

i think that deep down inside, you are pissed off at yourself and angry that YOU DID NOT take better control of your diabetes and got put onto disability, and you find any sort of work "demeaning", or BELOW your standards. all because YOU DID NOT take better care of yourself, and let the diabetes CONTROL YOU...

your blood sugar must be sky high as well....are you on ANY TYPE of insulin..???

how's your eye sight..???

if so, and even IF drivers that are insulin dependent, are allowed to drive, don't be too sure you will be hired.

YES, on a Lantus pen for insulin (14 units twice a day) & 2,000 MG of Metformin. Eys are OK (reading glasses @ $5.95 at Walmart - 2.00 strength) I don't feel that bad. Just have a hard time getting the blood sugar under 200. I'm practically living on salad now. Oh, and the gabapentin helps my restless leg at night, that'll show up in the drug test!

YES, I am pissed at myself...on many levels. The thing is, any job that pays less than $900 a week is not worth losing my disability pay....Tomorrow is the big day. My DOC, it looks like, just fills out this 4-page and the DOT/Chiropractor (Yeah, I know...not sure why so many chiropractors do this DOT Exam or are even qualified) makes the final determination on how long, if any, cert I get based on that form. I have never had an A1C over 9.5, I don't think.

The attached form is what the doctor has to fill out.

that's a lot of insulin

restless leg,

i have a relative with that, can hardly sleep. not sure if she is on meds, most likely is though.

you'll need your sleep, gotta be rested before you drive.

Can you show me where it says that on this form? I think that changed in Sept 2018. Maybe I misunderstood...
from that form:

At the certified medical examiner’s discretion, the individual who does not possess at least the preceding 3 months of electronic blood glucose self-monitoring records while being treated with insulin may qualify to operate a commercial motor vehicle for up to but not more than 3 months.

frankly, i think that your primary care doctor should be filling out that form, not some quack chiropractor.

i don't even know how those guys can be certified to give a DOT physical.

question remains, do you want to have to go to the doctor every 3 mo months for a physical..??

what if you are say about 3,000 miles from your chiropractor, you'll have to go to "some clinic", where they do not know you and BAM....no DOT card for you

is your chiropractor the doctor prescribing those meds for you??

and this

Progressive Eye Diseases 9. Date of last comprehensive eye examination:_____________________________ 10. Has the individual been diagnosed with either severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy or proliferative diabetic retinopathy? ___Yes ____No

you might need to go to an optomologist for a full eye exam.

No no no...reg. Doc fills out the form and the DOT Doc / Chiropractor makes the call how long the cert will be. Most likely 3 months...The reg doc prescribes the meds but I have to let DOT know, pee & hair follicle test...YES, I would have to plan for a new cert, which is why teams would work best for me.

I will have to deal with whatever cert I get. I have noticed if I get off my ass and walk for an hour and sweat then my blood sugar drops like a rock.

You would be surprised how many chiro's can do DOT's (around here anyway). I just need to lose the coffee-all-day routine.

That's just what I've always heard. It's what Prime told my uncle who's barely able to stay off the needle through diet and exercise.

You can get a waiver from the FMCSA go drive a CMV while injecting insulin, but it's a long, involved process. You have to show that you can maintain stable blood sugar over an extended period - 6 months I believe.

That doesn't mean you'll convince a carrier to give you a seat, as @Duck's uncle found out.

ok, maybe your primary doc is not certified for DOT physicals, and the Chiropractor is.....

but like iron pony said, to get that diabetic waiver is time consuming, and like i said, you may pass enough to get the job, but who will hire you.

do not forget, even as a team, you can be 3,000 miles away from your health care provider, and HAVE to go to a walk-in clinic, from there, they can deny you an updated card..

it's a toss up.

i wish you all the best, but seriously, a loading dock job, maybe a class B job, may be a better fit, and you'd still be earning money...but you might also have to cut back on your demand to make $900 weekly (whether that be net or gross)

I believe that "waiver" program got replaced with this form that your main DOC fills out.

I'm hoping the driver shortage will be my only saving grace.

Well, today is the first step. I spoke to Schneider yesterday and they seemed OK with my situation but then the hiring recruiter just wants to be sure you can fog a mirror. As far as my Main Health Provider, I go to the county health clinic. I haven't ever had an "incident". My Blood Pressure is near perfect & my BMI is 29 and I have a 16.5" neck so I shouldn't even be flagged for this "Sleep Apnea" test. But THANK YOU for all your input. I will more soon...

please try and remember, a recruiter is nothing more than a sales person...the "final sale" is when you get to orientation...and they do a deeper search, and know more than the salesperson.

from there, they can tell you a whole different story

again, good luck to you.

@Mike - doesn't SNI have all new hires do a sleep study?
