Freightliner – which has already laid off more than 2,600 workers – now says it’s going to cut as many as 1,500 jobs at its truck assembly plant in Cleveland, NC.

Freightliner officials told the Charlotte Observer the job cuts and layoffs were prompted by poor order expectations in 2007. Several news sources are calling the layoffs “permanent.”

At the same time, Freightliner is moving ahead with plans to build a $300 million plant near Mexico City that will employ up to 1,600 workers.

Freightliner’s parent company is Daimler, which operated Freightliner and Chrysler as separate operations with little overlap. The Oregonian reports that Daimler’s impending sale of the money-losing Chrysler shouldn’t have an effect on Freightliner operations.
