Driver's Daily Log

I am looking for a good Driver's Daily Log. I am used to the one ATS uses, just because I've been using it for the last two years. I am looking for one I can purchase. Can anyone recommend a good one and why they like that particular design?

JD Keller has some that are a landscape design. I'm thinking they may have more room for the remarks section.

The link I provided above should have the Canadian version available as well. It has a the Form 1 that you are required to have a copy of printed on the back of each page, as well as a spot to mark your dimensions for MB if you are traveling there. It is that companies Form 614 loose leaf sheet I believe.

Yep. DDL is the **** man. and you can also keep track of every conceivable expense too. Build reports. Create data for the accountant. All that stuff.

You can design your own like I did then take the file to Kinko's and have them print you carbon-less 2 part logs. Mine have 2 days per page. I have a nice leather binder from Staples that has a calculater built in and lots of pockets. I keep my whole trucking life in that binder.

I downloaded both DDL and Eclipse trials to see how both of them worked. I will agree that DDL has everything but the kitchen sink and will make just about any report you want, but if you only want to use it as a log book, it's a PITA.

I didn't like the standard form that Eclipse had, and although they don't have a page on their site where there are forms you can pick from, you can send them the form you want to use and they will put it into the program for you which is what I did. On DDL, every time you want to add or change anything another screen pops up and sometimes a third screen is comes up and you have to close those screens before you can go to the next entry.

On Eclipse, you always stay on one screen. The truck & trailer number and load info automatically carry over to the next day. You only have to enter new info if something changes. The location and activity (fuel, unload, etc.) have drop-down lists so you don't have to type the entire word, and if a location or activity is not in the list, after you type it once, it is automatically added to the list.

It is very simple and very fast; which is what I wanted. Below is the form I made and am using. I changed parts of the pre-printed name and address.

That's an interesting little note. Do you know where that is in the big green book? I have people that want proof when I tell them something like that.

395.8 is the reg on what you need. There is even a blank one you can download and print in PDF format from the FMCSA site. The maintenance part comes under a different category when there is a fleet or more then one driver involved but as far as daily log, this reg tells you what you must have.

396.11 describes the maintenance checklist with one exception listed below.

(d) Exceptions. The rules in this section shall not apply to a private motor carrier of passengers (nonbusiness), a driveaway-towaway operation, or any motor carrier operating only one commercial motor vehicle.

That's an interesting little note. Do you know where that is in the big green book? I have people that want proof when I tell them something like that.

I carry those regs printed out in my binder where I have my daily log and everything else. Nobody has ever questioned my logs except to say I was very organized as they flipped through all my documents.

If I'm reading this right it would only apply to Owner/Operators with their own authority.
