Do you find the quality of truck drivers on the road to be decreasing?

Sure sounds like it. :confused-96:
Because usual you people lack critical thinking and reading comprehension .
Some newb asked what an "ELD" was...

...setting off the corporate :bonk: tool in a frenzy of how everything would be just ducky if all the whining would stop.

:threadjacked:

I could care less how much you whine. Though it is refreshing that you admit it happens. I was explaining that there is no change unless you were engaging in the very activities elds are designed to prevent.

Let me guess your not only on the mystical load board at Prime that pays $2.50 a mile your on paper logs as well

Writing tickets "after the fact" based on the Elog's "real-time" information is still being decided upon, as we speak. The government has requested a year for the developers to make the Elog less invasive.

It took less than two weeks. So, what the developers have done is given a "perimeter" based on what you are doing. For example, if you are bobtailing home, the perimeter expands a bit, but it is still in "real-time"

You guys need to read up on this thing if you are going to blast everyone on it. There are a lot of issues that are direct violations or should I say " in direct violation" of certain rights we have as Americans.

Nothing new. Our "rights" are violated daily. These Elogs the beginning to a whole new breed of "trucker" and they most certainly are in violation of our rights in many ways, not to mention the fact...that they are demeaning to professional drivers.

They belittle us as professionals and they cab and will be used (at this time) to fine and shutdown carriers, in real-time...both before and after the fact

In my estimation, it is the smaller carriers who will suffer most, and as was stated previously, it is indeed the larger carriers that are advocating these devices.

They are throwing the word "safety" around to justify the end when the fact of the matter is based on immediate revenue.

The information is out there, don't have to take my word for it. Subscribe to Overdrive if you want the Howard Cosell style, minute by minute reports on what is happening daily in the Supreme Court over these game- changers.

I think they are highly misunderstood by a majority if truckers. Owner Operators seem to have a better understanding of what is at risk.

It's not about safety. It's about compliance.

I don't agree with the idea that adults need babysitters. But what I see is people bitching the most about elogs (which have been around for decades, by the way) are the same people bitching about rates while agreeing to run for quoted rates, fixing their logs to get more work in and blaming the large carriers...that make up only about 15% of for-hire rolling stock on the roads today. Y'all 85% small carriers and independents are shooting yourselves in the foot by underbidding each other and accepting whatever the brokers are offering.

Large carriers don't make money by bidding low on the small shippers who send out a load a day or so. When one of these small shippers calls a large carrier, they are often shocked by the high rates they're quoted. Two reasons: Large carriers sell service rather than rates and small shippers aren't worth their time to fiddle with unless they're willing to pay.

Independents' rates are determined by what independents are willing to run for and what they're willing to do for it. When independents brag about the two or three log books they keep so they can run three loads in the same number of days as a large carrier driver does two, while not making a single dime more at the end of the week, all I can do is shake my head and sigh.

Elogs have not hurt me at all. Before my crash two weeks ago, I was making more money than ever...on elogs, with a governed truck, with a lease payment and under the authority of a large carrier. The amount I cleared at the end of the week was easily comparable to what I see quoted by the big-time, run-their-asses-off, log-books-are-only-for-decoration independents. Y'all just work too damn hard to be making the same amount of money that I do.

Elogs are not the problem. Your rates and HoS are the problem. Fix those and elogs won't matter.

I find that the quality of drivers
matches the quality of the fleet.

I even saw this in my B days hopping
from company-to-company. The best
up kept fleets attracted the best drivers.

At my current Trucking company we had
a very competent experienced driver come in, he saw the conditions of the
fleet and other things and he was out-the-door.

Are you saying you're not a competent, experienced driver?

;) :D

Do you find the quality of truck drivers on the road to be decreasing? Do you think that the driver shortage is leading more carriers to hire less than qualified or unsafe drivers to meet capacity restraints? Do you feel 3pls are a factor in choosing the cheapest rate and not necessarily vetting out safe carriers?
Yes!

I know it's a job, but 3PL's suck ass. They can swipe 10 or 15% off the top, but they are greedy, waaaaay too greedy. More like40-50%

They also love to deal in double-blind shipments with is nothing but a bunch of fictitious BOL's

They love to double-broker loads.. and then they think we are too stupid to look at the load boards and figure out why one company has two of the exact same loads paying $300 more...

or when we negotiate to strongly for they tastes (when truck to load ratios are high) they drop the rates, or repost the load... and tell you it "fell through'

I know, I know... drivers will continue to shop for better loads after a confirmation also, so it goes both ways.

And there are some drivers here that have absolutely NO CLUE what a 3PL is and why we detest them.

They do serve a purpose. The dirty underbelly of the trucking industry.

Personally, I think a broker should only be used as a LAST RESORT... maybe to get you home or to keep you from dead-heading.

We should all (at some point) have the luxury of knowing what its like to haul DIRECT from a shipper without a middleman... and to actually get paid what the load is worth.

We should....

Too many O.Os and trucking companies rely on 3PLs as their only source of freight... and that just gives them more power over you.. and gives you LESS negotiating strength...

and the worst part is, when they CANT cover a load, suddenly that same load youve BEEN HAULING pays ten times as much and includes DH pay...

...like we are just plain stupid... EOR.

Recently, I had to go to the Az/Cali border checkpoint with a empty 53 with a forklift in the back...A new guy went to Rialto Ca, hooked up to a overloaded 53 and checked in at 96k at that scale...tires rubbin bottom of trailer..he didnt do a logbook, didnt have a fresh DVIR..1 year with CDL..I believe after he was cut 3 or 4 violations as a break, he still had $10,000 in tickets..

I asked "what the flippin ba-jesus were you thinking?"....He said "I didnt think i had to do all that shit for a easy day run"...

Another new dood, a city p&d driver asked "do i placard the truck too if i have hazmat"
I said "yes"
This dood did it...one on the grill, back window of his daycab, and on his dang doors...I could not believe it
(go suck an egg david encinas, I'll never know how you made it this far in life)

Anyways, couple of new guys for ya

Even in the ND oilpatch in 2011 2012, the highly trained military drivers I experienced werent all that hot...they were poppin pressurized caps,, and getting trucks stuck etc etc...

I think driving the big stuff is like playin guitar...some can do it, some cant...but, the guitar guy can fudge driving a truck a little bit, and the truck driver can learn a little riff or chord on a guitar...

I just wonder if/when the "new breed" is ever going to wake up and realize just how much their "parents" and "educators" have lied to them their life long and left them unable to cope with the realities of the adult world? It ain't really that they're stupid or worthless, they ain't. They've just been taught that they don't have to. They've been taught that somebody else will do it for them. They've never been allowed to grow up.

Maybe when they realize that the "furriners" have all the paying jobs and they ain't paying for the fantasyland gravy train no more. :dunno:

By enhancing CSA enforcement program all transportation companies should provide knowledge about carrier safety performance to their drivers, so they can understand the problems caused due to rash driving and avoiding traffic rules. By doing so it brings in the new era of scrutiny and safety.

Yeah we already have a buttload of safety videos to watch every month.

It's pretty much more annoying than effective.

Gotta drive faster to make up for the time spent on videos. Haha

Careful.

You'll cause some to be butt hurt.

Did you create a safe place for them first?
