DEF Rant

"Trophy points" is just some side program that's embedded in the software for Xenforo and doesn't mean anything. We don't use them for anything.

SCR is nothing but a large added expense and a power sucker as well while offering nearly zero positive impact for the enviroment. SCR systems unequivocally hurt fuel economy. they also add weight and complexity and they certainly do not allow engine makers to tune the engines the way they want

On my trip to Livonia MI this week, my DEf system took a fit. Normally, the truck does a "parked regen" about once a day. Started doing it every time I hit idle. Then light started going on... the "electronic fault" lightning bolt, the "filter full" light, the "do a park regen now" message. Stopped and hit the regen switch.... no reaction.

Houston shop says "drive it and deliver". Ok.

Made it there and back with only 1 "derate" (on a hill on I-71 of course).... but went through DEF like I had a hole in the tank. Used up 3 tankfulls. Normal for that run is less than 1/2 a tank.

Oh, fuel milage was 4.5 mpg for most of the trip.

Gawd, I'm happy I don't own this POS.

cars can regen on the fly you figure trucks can too

NO ENGINE CAN LIVE breathing 70% of its own exahaust. 400k most are carboned up boat anchores . Picked up 2 ,,2012 Pete's a couple years ago ,350k 425 Cummins. Turbo actuator was going nuts at idle on one but owner took delivery anyway Texarkana KW said it was normal. Month later turbo blew. I don't have to tell you the repair possess or cost.
But the second Cummins exposed a huge weakness ... after a rocker popped out and bounced around till the cam wedged it causing a cracked head.
We found that since these engines are now breathing in 70% exhaust, the one part of the engine that pre emission trucks would normally be near spotless "intake manifold " was now attempting to make diamonds from caked on rock like carbon, choking the engine . Engine builder was amazed at how much the diameter had decreased.
When a section of carbon fell from the walls of the intake, it was if a handful of rocks entered the process.
No trucks engine is immune to this i dont care who you are. And NEVER USE fuel additives CHEMICALS TO REMOVE CARBON BUILD-UP on a used engine. It's like pouring radiator flush in an old car. Yeah it works alright... a little too good.

I am convinced that the carbon footprint left by these engines is enormous compared to pre 2010 . Look at all the workers and companies involved making sensors , 3k filters, DEF tanks, catalytic exahaust chambers ...
What ? Maybe 300,000 workers help in clogging the roads ? Probably more since there is no one size fits all incinerator for the masses... every company has their own method to pass the junk science test. But look at the resources used to make this mess?? The plastics, steel and not to mention precious metals gold platinum ect ect on the circuit boards.
And DEF??? Look at all the trucksand plastics involved in the transportation of basically urine we used to spread on feilds?? But now it's like Gold,,,. This has to be what the CIA is using to fund Black Ops now. Replacing street drugs and appearing to go legit while useing a bs unheard of mom and pop company as keeper of the flame and residuals too.

Face it ... it's ECO Friendly when the thugs at the EPA do tests on new engine prototypes. But after the stamp of bs approval they come offrom the assembly line with just barely enough momentum to get past your warranty. But nowadays even with a top of the line extended warrenty.. the shops are weeks behind when it comes to DEF associated problems. I would find myself bouncing from engine manufacturer to platform builder .. each one at a loss for an explanation or time frame of repair. Favorite word "week" every time.

what if you just put water in the DEF tank?

You'd ruin the system, it would cost over $5K to repair, not covered by warranty and, if a company truck, you'd be fired if you're lucky.

We had guys doing this back when I was pulling tankers. When the DEF tank would get low, they would mix in a gallon or so of water in order to make it back to the yard. Actually did it on a regular basis, and never had a problem.

Never would have attempted 100% water in the system though.

Everyone quit doing this though, once DEF become available at the pump everywhere.

They thought putting sensors in aircraft was a good idea.
It recently - as in a few weeks ago recently - cost 198 innocent people their lives.

They thought putting particulate filters on diesels was a good idea.
Anecdotal evidence suggests these filters themselves now pose a threat to anyone and everything in the vicinity.

They thought diesel exhaust fluid was a good idea.
They must not have used it before.

They thought computerizing vehicular powertrains was a good idea.
Apparently electronics degrees were rare back then (and still seem to be today).

Still not enough?

A decade ago I had my house wiring inspected. The inspector said it was safe.
Twice since then, TWO problems in the same box nearly caused the house to burn down.

So when people say something is safe, or "it works", are they absolutely sure it does? Because the above examples seem to suggest otherwise, but pardon me if I am wrong.

I can't decide which is worse: automotive electronics, emissions controls, climate change, or air pollution. ARGH!

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Both as a professional diesel mechanic and son of an owner op. I am starting an entire business around helping you owner ops get through those "parked regens" and even getting yall off the shoulder due to DERATING, or "limp mode" all without dealing with a tow or dealership.

I'm getting manufacturer software to allow me to do this- MOBILY.

Drive safe and fight on

Cars went through this in the 80's,
I know right.

Why can't they just stick a giant cat converter on all semi's to suck up the
exhaust particles.

Besides, I heard that the ozone layer has
almost filled in again. They need to outfit every farm cow with a buttalytic converter.

This thread makes me laugh. We all know the truth, yet the government is ignoring it. It's funny that the batteries in their Prius' cause more environmental damage than diesel
