Cutting the cord

I only got Comcast to ease up the heat on my phone. But I could go back to that again if I wanted/had to. I don't spend a lot of time streaming outside of the phone anyway. They'd never notice.

I am still amazed at the amount of money we spend today to watch a TV. That and how everyone in the house has to have their own personal phone to take with them everywhere they go. Lots of money wasted every year on this, something my parent and grandparents never would have considered.

i went full solar and cut the cord from the power company.. directv will be next once the contract is up.. iv'e cut the cord from any company that has third world customer service as well.. this is why i love my discover card so much they use american support...

I would love for my next house to be solar!

How did you manage to get enough solar energy harnessed to replace the grid?

i have a room full of inverter's and forklift batteries and all kind of other crap along with a natural gas genset. we live in a smart house. so the house is doing a million things to figure out where the energy is NOT being used and shuts things off opens and closes the blinds controls ceiling fans on and on. we also use geo thermal for mainly cooling though it can heat to.. my system was custom designed and NOT cheap!!! but when i sell. my house will sell faster and i will get a better return than people with out solar. my home is big enough to handle a large setup though it's NOT cheap to go off the grid and god forbid if something breaks you'll be the one fixing it after the warranty is out since your your own power co or pay out the ass to get it fixed..

you should goto youtube and google out net zero homes that's what i'm in with the exception i'm off the grid from the light company as there the devil. i'm in CA it never rains here:D:stare1:..
my house will sell faster than someones that don't have solar as well as it will sell for more than someones without solar

How's it working out?
go bk and re read.. though it's working out great. who would you rather pay a solar company for an install or the evil light co. if you want to go solar the best thing to do is to get rid of all the power suckers unless your prepared to have a stroke on the cost to go off grid:eek:. we have may complex systems we have it set up when we use the hot water it drains down heating the cold water coming in so that less energy is used to heat it. we also have solar hot water would i install it again no i would not after my system breaking down 3 times in 4 years and theres better hybrid systems out there now. i could really go into detail it is a complicated system:stare1: even worse if something breaks and you have to spend a week playing IT tech trying to figure crap out. but it's been pretty reliable everything has it's quirks but it all breaks down at the worst time:mad:. NEVER lease solar panels it's a joke if you sell your home the new buys have to qualify to take over the payments of the lease and if they don't qualify your screwed in a lease even if you don't own the home!!! i'll be adding a level one charger this week so i can charge my car up. belive me i'm having a hard time swallowing the cost since i am on solar i need a special charger

if your building why not just go all the way and go net zero:confused-96:.

Tall order in Ar [where @Mike is].
Like here [Mo] and unlike where you are.

I have a SS with usage and production.
This time of year we produce about double our usage but in winter we produce something like 5%.
Our array consist of 70 panels and the footprint is about 30 x 40.
I would have to cover the entire 2 acres with panels to be off grid in the winter...
and I'd be producing 50x what we use in summer.

you can still net zero and be grid tied. i would never go off grid in a house out of CA NV AZ. and windmills are a joke there a hit or miss they need to be high up with nothing obstructing em and the small ones are a complete waste of money!!! then they start getting hungry for parts as they get older.. solar works everywhere the sun shines!!!
i know when i went solar they asked me how much of the bill i wanted covered part of it half of it or all of it before they did the install and they wanted a years of electric bills so they could figure out the highs and lows..
if you have a well insulted pad and use a mini split system your already 90% net zero

what do you hope to accomplish by going solar:confused-96:. generating enough power to pay part of your bill or all of your bill or freedom from the power co all together:confused-96:. don't be surprized if the solar installer tries to keep you from going off the grid. going off grid is NOT cheap by far. then you have to worry about things like replacing batteries and inverters charge controllers wich can ADD up.. it can get so exspensive that it's cheaper to pay the utility co to put a pole in and run wire:D. let me know when you have your heart attack:D

Oh I don't even know if I will. I was more curious than anything.

you can still net zero and be grid tied.

Mo regs allow the utility to pay about 2.5 cents per KWH while charging about 12.5 cents per KWH.
I have to produce about 400 KWH's of overage just to eliminate my $10 meter fee.
The same amount of usage in winter costs me about $50.
The month-to-month overage is a cash credit on a monthly basis meaning I can't carry over the KWH's for later use.

I'm not whining because the utility covered 90% of the cost for my array.
I wouldn't have done it if it were all out-of-pocket because I wouldn't live long enough to break even [unless you plug in some wild guesses and absurd assumptions regarding future costs].

That being said, if I HAD paid it all out-of-pocket, I would tarp half the array this time of year just to keep the utility from getting the feed at 20% of retail...
or more likely would have only installed enough panels to cover the usage in the most productive months.

As it stands my break even is 3-4 years so it's all good.
:)

i could have had the utility cover part of my array and give me a free electric car charger. but the reason i didn't do it is because they wanted to lock me into a two year contract of them monitoring my usage:mad:. i have no problems with them monitoring my usage they do anyways i just didn't want to be married to em and more so after all of the times they pissed me off

Oh I don't even know if I will. I was more curious than anything.
you can pick your flavor you can do a cheap setup that will pay part of your bills to set up's that will pay all of your bills and then some. or then you have the really crazy setups for people that want to be sustaining and those can get pretty pricey depending on what you want it to do we even heat the pool with solar heated water. but the things i am talking about is pretty pricey. and once i get my level one charger installed this week i will be able to charge the car up and really boost up my MPG'S:yahoo:
