Another nuclear verdict: $1 billion dollars

That's ridiculous.
if i recall, the state of NJ, spikes one's insurance (auto) for a wreck, even if he/she is not at fault.

so no, insurance spikes are all too real,

"Mike" or any other owner, would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, he was unaware of the employee's personal problems, which can be hard not to know.

people talk....that employee, could unload his troubles to another employee. word gets around, kinda hard not to.

now to have at least "make the offer" to get the employee help, could go a long way in exonerating the owner.

no, an employee should not be coddled. but when the trouble signs are there, and no help offered, then it'll rest on the owners shoulders.

why do you think some employers offer counseling services, such as for drug/alcohol abuse in thier hiring packages?

i can't recall, the specific term for it.
Nope employers should stay out of their employees' personal lives unless the employee specifically asks for help.

Basing it on coworker gossip is even more absurd. And that gossip is why I don't tell anyone associated with the same company anything.

I would actually consider it offensive and an affront to my privacy if a dispatcher or manager or anyone came at me with unsolicited help.

Get out of your company bubble. If I hired a driver, that would be the only employee I have. Unless the driver confided in me, I would not know.

And even if I did know, the fact that something tragic happened in their life would not be cause to take the keys. If it was cause, I would have been pulled from making a living multiple times in my life.

That stuff is handled confidentially by third party providers, and the employer is not the contact to reach out to such services, any more than they are for doctor appointments. Employers put posters everywhere for it but they do not know who avails themselves it.

There are a lot of people who seem to think their employers should take care of all of their personal needs, in addition to paying them.

GAnthony probably thinks his boss should rock him to sleep and sing him a lullaby every night.

that would be nice, as much so, to be spoon fed raviolis.

Even if you did know and you took the keys away, that would open a whole new can of worms regarding employment law it could be construed as discrimination and that could open you up to a lawsuit as well from the employee.
Employers walk a very fine line when it comes to employment law and every other kind of law out there.
