Amber Alerts making people upset

More complaints to 911, on social media after Amber Alert issued for 2-year-old Brantford girl

People are really upset over these amber alerts. I remember the first time this hit the news people in Quebec and Manitoba were getting an Amber Alert from Peel Region (Toronto area). People then were calling it dumb, because of the distance.

Now, we’re still hearing the same thing. A kid went missing in Brantford and people in Ottawa, 7-8 hours away, were getting the alerts. Seems a little far-flung

Then today I heard that people were calling in to 911 and complaining about them. Now everyone’s talking about a petition to be able to fine people who mis-use 911 emergency services

What a cockup.

I had similar rants as you until I read up on how Canada does it. It's not like ours.

Apparently they can't unsubscribe from the national alerts that they call "Presidential" that are intended for nuclear attacks. They've been using the presidential for local Amber alerts.

Oh well, as you can see, mine are on. I would imagine that anyone having a child abducted, even the folks currently complaining, would probably want everyone’s alerts on as well.

A kid can be several hours away by the time an alert goes out.

I literally said this exact thing until I read up on what the Presidential version of an alert is. And so I can understand where they're coming from.

I still have mine activated too.

we have a "silver alert" here as well. of course, for older people that just go missing, walking away, etc...many are not found alive.

A Silver Alert is a public notification system in the United States to broadcast information about missing persons – especially senior citizens with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other mental disabilities – in order to aid in locating them.

That is true, however you can set your phone so the alerts do not wake you up. or example last night I received the alert but did not know about it until i looked at my phone in the morning.

The presidential one overrides all that from what I've read, and they've apparently been using it for the Amber alerts. I think that's what the real complaint is about based on the comments.

Just go into your settings. You will not be woken up by the alerts but the notification will be on your phone when you do wake up and look at your phone.

I have my settings set up so I do not get the alert alarm. Because, I am not waking up and putting on pants and going on a search.

I am not a total asshole, If I am awake and on the road I will make a note of the vehicle and the plate number.
